Just for once

Wouldn't it be nice, just for once for it to be our turn to punch above our weight and be really good.

Instead of being less than we should be.

Fingers crossed.
I feel exactly the same way mate, forever the bridesmaid, 60 years old and all I've had from this club is an FA cup win and two 7th place finishes, in the last 40 year, pathetic really isn't it, lets hope Di Canio is the man...

You started just as we turned to shit:lol:

Have we ever had the chant "where were you when you were shit?" Aimed at us?
That would be nice, to not be seen as shit.

Aye,and it was answered with "we're still here and we're still shit".(think we where top of the league at the time)

I think we we're getting possed off Crewe at the time:neutral:

My Great-Granda Loudon used to tell me about the Charles Buchan days. My Granda Loudon used to tell me about the Raich Carter days. My Dad and Uncles told me of the Shack days.

I was immersed in the history of our great club long before I was taken to my first match, the opening match of the 1960/61 season v Swansea. We won 2-1, can't remember a damn thing about the match. What I remember is emerging on to The Roker End and bursting into tears. I'd never seen grass so green, and the floodlights raising up to the sky, the sights and smells (tab smoke mostly ) and so on. And so began "my era", the 60's, King Charlie.

Didn't totally get into understanding what was happening on the pitch for a couple seasons I have to say. But, by the end of the 1962/63 season and the heartache of that last home match v Chelsea, I was right into it. The following season was the first of my great Sunderland teams, the one that got us back to the top level, the first promotion. Alan Brown jumped ship and the board didn't make the right appointment, Bill Shankly was keen if you read the history books, and the yo-yo years started.

Move forward and it's not until Bob Stokoe that we saw more good times. Not just the cup, which was wonderful and to quote Max Boyce, I was there. but the promotion that followed, squibbles in the boardroom - twats. It didn't work out, more bad years followed. The worst years, Mackemenermy, relegated to the 3rd division. I wish it hadn't happened, but what fun season that was, smashed all before us out of sight. Stayed at Marco's hotel in York not long ago and Mrs.Corvus and me had a good craic with Marco and his missus, Debbie, one evening about that time and what followed the following season. Play-off semi-final, Hardiman booting Burridge and the wonderful night at the landfill. Ok we botted it at Wembley, but still got promoted. RSM couldn't give Denis Smith resources and the yo-yo continued. We'll forget about the Buxton/Butcher seasons co they were shite and along came Peter Reid. The Peter Reid years were wonderful until it all went wrong. RSM failed again, firstly appointing Wilko then failing to back MikMac when things got going again.

Enter Lord Quinn, the man imo who has given more of himself to SAFC than any other in our history, and another lift. But headbanger Keane was a bad move. We are just about up to date. O'Neill was lost without his mate Robbo, Cloughie (and how I loved him as a player for us when I was a kid, and what he achieved afterwards)/ Peter Taylor situation.

And so we find ourselves in the hands of PDC and his fellow countrymen. New signings going on left, right and centre and another dawn. I have to admit whilst I'm not totally clued up on all these lads we are signing, there's certainly a buzz going on.

Just for once? There's been many periods during my lifetime when Sunderland teams have thrilled me. Maybe we are on the dawn of sustained growth to get SAFC amongst the elite again.

Maybe Ellis Short and the crazy Italian can deliver something that has not been seen for decades. I hope so. Just for once, no. I want us to be the football club we were before 1957/58.

Would be long overdue. We have been waiting to do that since about 1995. Many teams who were behind us in terms of development when Peter Reid took us up have overtaken us to do just that and establish themselves as a solid top 10 team a long time ago. It is now our time to shine.

But the players have to be good enough and work to an effective strategy which takes a good enough manager. And the only way that can happen is to wait and see if PDC can do well with us and sign players that are a world away from past players who we entrusted to do well like Liam Miller, Liam Lawrence, Jon Stead, Stern John, Kelvin Davis, Daryl Murphy and Matthew Killgallon. The players PDC has brought in are clearly to a new transfer plan. Past managers have just had a hit-and-hope kind of mentality. They were bought in hope more than anything.

harry, you make a very good point.
even by the law of averages we should've had a few more sunny days.

when we've had bad teams we've been bad, when we've had decent teams we've underachieved, when we've had good teams we've been unlucky. whatever permutation you take we always seem to find a way of f**king up.

it'd be great to just enjoy a full season out of the blue.

I would second that. If you take 100 penalties to an open goal and miss 99 times one will go in. It has to. The concept of 'law of averages' is a great leveller. Teams who have all the luck and find success easier to achieve don't always have it their own way. Teams who don't have luck and find success easy to achieve have one or two small bright periods. They may win a game or score for the first time in 10 or maybe more attempts.

Look at our form against Everton. We have not won at home since the 2001-2002 season. Last season we finally won. We have not won at Goodison Park since the 1996-1997 season. We have drawn two and lost nine of the eleven since. It has to happen. Prior to last season we did not score since the 7-1 loss in the 2007-2008 season. Last season we finally scored in a 2-1 defeat.

I'm not sure how I would cope with a bit of glory

I really am looking forward to the first game of the season though! The sheer mystery of how it will turn out is very exciting. :-D

Same here. I will be very nervous. But looking forward to it. And I will be very excited.
