Backing out of a verbal job offer agreement

Anyone got experience of this from either side of the table?

I've been offered a job with Company A and agreed over the phone I'd take it. Now though I've been offered a better position at Company B which I'd rather take (better pay/perks/prestige/location).

What's the best way to worm out of job A? Or shall I just stick to my word and take the first job? Does this make me a shit person?

All advice and abuse welcomed. If there is anyone in town planning on here then a PM would be appreciated.

Do what's best for you, at the end of the day that's what everyone else will be doing.

Phone them and tell them you apologise but you've had a better offer. Inflate what you've been offered slightly, they may counteroffer and you can use that to negotiate more money at Company B.

As a matter of law you've accepted an offer so a verbal contract has been formed. However, in reality if you just tell them you've changed your mind (could use not wanting to relocate or something as an excuse) you'll probably be fine. If you went through a selection process chances are they'll just work their way down the list and offer the job to the next person rather than trying to enforce the contract by forcing you to work for them or suing you for breaching it.

Tell them you've had a better offer but thank them for the opportunity.

If they really want you they might counter offer and match the new deal or better it. If not, chances are you weren't that valuable to them anyway.

Look after yourself here mate.

Aye, I did it about 12 years ago. They had offered me the job straight after the interview which I had said yes to. Got into work the next day fully expecting to hand my notice in and found letter on my desk with change to job description and change in pay. Immediately rang the place and had to leave a voice message saying unfortunately I had a change of mind and wouldn't be able to accept the job. Just to be sure followed it up with an email as well.

Felt a bit shit about it to be honest, and even now there are times I think "what if?"

Happened a couple of times at my last place, offered a couple of people who said yes then took another position elsewhere, shit happens and we were fine about it. Incidentally, one of the lads has just been offered another position there apparently.

I accepted a position years back and retracted when my employer offered me a better psosituon, that company was fine about it and told me to get in touch if I was looking in the future.

Curnts trick, and shows an absolute lack of integrity.

Company A have had a lucky escape.
I disagree, the lad has to look after himself. I've had it happen to me a couple of times and whilst it's frustrating and they've burned their bridges, I understand why they've done it.
A lad off here has done it twice. One of the other managers gave him a second chance after he'd knocked back a job offer from me. I suspect that he made the wrong decision but I don't hold it against him on a personal level.
As long as the OP is honest and doesn't string it out further than he needs to, I think it's fair enough.

This is basically my view on it as well which is why I'm feeling like shit. I was never expecting the job at B and did say to A that I was waiting to hear back from them but just went ahead and accepted the job anyway. Stupid on my part like.

Don't be daft man, aye its not ideal...but as said, this happens. company A will move on without a second thought i reckon.
In the main, we are just numbers imho.

You'd be the first to complain if company A verbally offered you the job but then withdrew it and gave it to someone else instead

Who would've thought the fast food recruitment market would be so cut throat
This man does have a point like, i would like to stick to my initial reaction.

Many people reconsider a job offer after they've had time to think about it. I'm sure they'd prefer you were straight with them, rather than accept a job and leave after a short time because the job is not really what you want.
