Thanks for your advice... It arrived today...That is a really fantastic PSU in every way. You'll be able to use it from system to system.

Brilliant!. I have the 750w version and you can tell it's premium quality. When you get a completely new system, you'll be able to use this PSU in it.
Installed the new GPU- absolutely chuffed with the results, a huge improvement over my last one.Brilliant!. I have the 750w version and you can tell it's premium quality. When you get a completely new system, you'll be able to use this PSU in it.

Happy for you mate.. now buy Witcher 3 and pre-order Fallout 4Installed the new GPU- absolutely chuffed with the results, a huge improvement over my last one.
I'm already dabbling, somewhat cautiously. All of the reviews for this new GPU go on about how far you can overclock it. To be fair it's working great as it is anyway, I'm running older games on it so having no issues with performance. Finally playing Crysis 2 in all of it's DX11 and super high graphics glory!!Aye, the massive hole in your PC was the GPU. At no point was your original card a "gaming card". The CPU was a high-end one when it was out, an it'll still be absolutely fine.
You have the same GPU give or take as me, and my system flies.
Now that you have a better balance, you could start learning about how to overclock if you fancied it. Its an interesting area tbh.
Fallout has been pre-ordered since day one.. can't wait!!! When I get through a few of my older games (now in high def!) I'll buy Witcher 3, everyone seems to be raving about it.Happy for you mate.. now buy Witcher 3 and pre-order Fallout 4
He should download MSI Afterburner first to get an idea about how it's performing thermally when running benchmarks.Did you get the card second hand? If so and your thinking of overclocking id look at putting some new thermal paste on the gpu heatsink. I've just done it with mine using some noctua nt-h1 and its brought load temps down by 6 or 7 degrees.
Application of new good thermal paste would improve temps of any card in fairnessHe should download MSI Afterburner first to get an idea about how it's performing thermally when running benchmarks.
That is true, but it might not be needed if it's already working within normal thermal ranges.Application of new good thermal paste would improve temps of any card in fairness
As @HebburnMackem pre-empted I ran MSI Afterburner on it. It has yet to go above 69 degrees despite me overclocking it very conservatively on a test run.Did you get the card second hand? 70 degrees is nowt.As @HebburnMackem pre-empted I ran MSI Afterburner on it. It has yet to go above 69 degrees despite me overclocking it very conservatively on a test run.
I've reverted it to default and it runs in the mid sixties at full pelt. From my limited knowledge that is well within acceptable limits!
Stress tested using GPUTool (I think that's what the software is called) - then played a couple of games on ultra settings for an hour or so and checked the temperatures and it hit a maximum of 69c when marginally overclocked. Is that stress testing it or playing games? Do those cards have a turbo boost feature?
Well that's a good sign I supposeMy 7870 had tons of headroom for overclocking, but despite spending hours doing the cpu, I just never bothered.
Maybe cos nothing has ever bothered it so far
I remember getting over 10% on each gpu speed and ram speed stable. But not at the same time. Gave up before finding a stable result.Well that's a good sign I suppose
I done 5% on each and it was perfectly stable so I'm assuming there is scope for more after that. Like you said though, it's coping with anything I throw at it on default at the moment so I'll leave it as is.I remember getting over 10% on each gpu speed and ram speed stable. It's not necessarily harder but is more involved. It also depends if your board is locked down in the bios. You generally want a better cooler than stock as well as you will have to raise voltages to get the cpu stable at higher speeds which creates more heat. It's generally a case of bump up the multiplier, run prime 95, bump up the voltage till its stable and then repeat until you reach the chips voltage limit/ it won't stabilise/it gets too hot.I done 5% on each and it was perfectly stable so I'm assuming there is scope for more after that. On a side note is it simple to overclock the CPU?
