I agree with Sam, from The Sunderland Echo

It's almost as if it might be true.....or do you really think they work on losing possession and aimless floated long balls in training!

Aye, cos its as easy as that. I will take over instead and just tell them to defend really well and be class in attack. Doddle

The aimless passes are basically just clearances, cos we are always under pressure and have shite footballers.

I do think our passing is improving under Sam.

I'm looking at Kone and Kirchhoff and thinking that along with M'villa and Defoe we have a good spine of players who look comfortable to the point of effortlessness (is that a word?) on the ball. The wide players can be excused a bit as they're expected to try and make something happen.

If Johnson is still about in a few weeks i'd be tempted to put him in the middle in place of Cattermole (assuming Sam wants better possesion).

Sam's right but it isn't just about the player making the pass. if the recipients movement isn't sharp enough it makes it easier to intercept, then the next pass is held for a fraction of a second longer from nerves and before you know it hoofball. stems from lack of confidence and general crapness

I don't believe you Sam. You could see from the off what he's game plan was.....sit deep defend a point for 70+mins and then try to hit them on the brake the last 15-20 mins.

Oshea is the worse culprit as he normally has time to look around him yet still hoofs it aimlessly.

We play hoof ball even when we dont have to. I dont see sam berating his players when that happens and twlling them to be more patient. Seems to me that he wants a fast direct style happening. Hence why i dont just think its the players eho are causing all the problems

The passing was worse, especially from the players who passed it best against Man City (Kirchhoff, M'Vila etc)

But we also missed Lens IMHO. He gets on the end of some of the more aimless balls due to his pace. You can basically put it into an area, without being as accurate as usual, and he'll be able to get himself nearer to it to at least give a defender less time to pick a pass etc. He also got himself nearer to Defoe.

That's why we played Watmore instead of Johnson IMO, and then why N'doye came on ahead of Johnson. For that role, we need pace. We were without Lens, Borini and then Watmore - its hardly surprising that we didn't play aswell...

You look at Leicester against man city. Similarly kind of set up to us, they play long balls, difference is they play it into space, down the channels or over the top. We play a direct, hopeful ball to the head of a 5 foot 7 centre forward. Its a f***ing joke, the players must be either thick as shit or the manager is instructing them to do it, probably a bit of both tbh.

Our ball retention and passing was shit!

Allardyce insists his game-plan was NOT for Sunderland to be so defensive-minded, yet the encounter developed in that fashion due to their sloppiness on the ball.

He said: “The possession was poor.

“We didn’t sit back on purpose. We sat back because we kept giving the ball to them.

“If we didn’t pass the ball to them, then we kicked it out of play.

  1. “These players are better than that, but maybe the fear and not getting a result after Man City put us on the back foot a little bit.”

All we need to know, he shouldn't even have that word in his head.

Good point, for all of the criticism he gets on here, Johnson is the one that always makes himself available for a pass

There's not much a manger can really do apart from shout at the knackers.

I disagree.....he can decide which is his favoured formation and his best 11 players. Then he can work relentlessly on shape, passing and movement in training AND instead of pointing the finger at others accept that ultimately if the team plays with "fear" he, as manager, bears responsibility for that......It's his job to select and motivate the team he puts out on the pitch.

He will be.

Our ball retention has been dire for years. Slightly improved under Poyet for a short spell but in the main we rarely dominate possession. Apart from West Brom and Norwich we our probably the weakest in the league for keeping the ball.

Leicester aren't any great shakes at keeping it, either, but when they do get the f*cker....
