Shocking news. Rip.

Hopefully a tribute to him will be a revolution in helmet technology.
Absolutely, shocking devastating news. As somebody else said it's all the more shocking that it could have happened to any one of us here (albeit this was a freak accident).

Thing is, if he'd been wearing the new helmet launched by his helmet manufacturer it might have hit the grill. I think the ICC, ECB, Cricket Australia and every other body need to decided what the safest helmet spec is and have a blanket rule saying that's the type of helmet you have to wear. If the spec is that the grill has to be a certain size and/or cover a certain area it would still allow different manufacturers to make them so you wouldn't get the price shooting through the roof if they said "x company's helmet is the one to use".

What the fuck has respect got to do with anything? A bouncer is to aim a very hard, fast moving ball in the general area of the batsman's head. It is dangerous and always has been - thats the point, to intimidate the batsman. That is something that does not have to be part of the game - does bodyline mean anything to you?

The fact there has not been that many serious injuries is because of the reactions of the batsman and the helmets they wear, brought in for this precise danger!

The game of cricket is not (as you seem to believe) a game for namby pambys!

A skilled batsman welcomes the short ball as a genuine run scoring opportunity whereas the bowler is attempting to get him to mistime a hook shot, which can result in a catch.

Maybe you would be happier if they replaced the existing ball with a sponge one (that must be bowled underarm) and insist that players are only allowed to strike it gently for no more than a single!

This. I also do wonder if it may be time to make them compulsary altho this clearly isnt the time for knee jerking and Im aware he was wearing one at the time.

Bloody hell! What awful news to get out of bed to

The helmet he was wearing made no difference. The ball appeared to strike at the base of his neck and no helmet would have helped. It is a tragic accident.

Obviously i feel for the family but also spare a thought for the bowler - how he must be feeling at the moment is anyones guess. He needs support through this as well.

RIP

Suggestions are that the newer helmet has a larger grill where it connects the helmet and covers further back around behind the ear. I doubt anyone will ever know but it might have taken off enough of the impact. There has to be a law introduced that you have to wear a helmet in all conditions, I think there already should have been even if it was to prevent injuries like chunky got (sorry for bringing it up).

Agreed, Abott must be absolutely distraught.

was shocked to hear he'd passed away this morning, RIP to the lad, terrible for his family and friends... such a freak accident though (Vertebral artery dissection), apparently only about 100 previous deaths from this and only once did it involve a cricket ball...

Ive been hit three times on the head now. even on slow village pitches it bloody hurts - the worst one was top edging one right into my eye. Luckily i had turned my head to see where the ball was supposed to go and ended up being hit just above the eye. if i hadnt i probably would have lost an eye.

I have been toying with the idea of wearing one for the coming season, especially as i'm getting old and my eyesight is starting to go - this may just make my mind up.

Very sad news. Total freak of an accident.

From the stuff I've read, the ball managed to miss the helmet and catch him full on the back of the head.
