Your XI for the first test of the summer

The Rat

Striker
It is coming around fast, a few lads putting their hands up for the middle order spots, Joe Clarke etc.

I am going with something slightly different.

Cook
Gubbins
Root
Malan
Bairstow
Vince
Buttler (WK)
Wood
Broad
Leach
Jimmy

I am going to bow to superior knowledge of the likes of Nasser who rate Gubbins. But I would have no qualms in playing Stoneman. I would also pick him if Cook bats himself out of the series.

I think Vince has something but is unfairly being picked at 3. I'd try him further down.

Lets take the gamble and try Root and Jonny further up the order. Buttler is in freak form, sometimes you just have to roll the dice.

This won't be the team mind, and I not passionate either way, just interested to hear people's views

There is an argument for keeping Bairstow at 7 with Ali at 8 in England as it works so well. Would always be up for that

If Bairstow is going to give up the gloves they have to give them to Foakes. Best with the gloves in the country (apparently) and better first class record with the bat than Buttler.

Buttler isn’t even playing FCC so whilst I get the talent argument, it’s hard to look past Foakes

Batting - who the fuck knows. Pick 2 from a long list
Bowling - Leach has to play. So you’re looking at Anderson and Broad plus one. Woakes for me I think, but I buy the arguments for Wood, Porter etc. Even a complete bolter like Stone or Helm.

So you got half way down the middle order

Haway then, I want to know yours.

Aye

In all seriousness, I really don't know. I haven't given it that much thought - I'd be inclined to give Stoneman another chance, probably keep much of the status quo for now.

I would like to see Livingstone in there though.

Cook
Stoneman
Livingstone
Root
Malan
Stokes
Bairstow
Woakes
Broad
Leach
Anderson

Bairstow simply has to bat higher,he is our second best batsman, batting number 7 holds a big risk that the team is all out with him stuck on twenty odd not out, which would be crazy imo.

Whether he has the gloves or not, your second best batsman should not be batting 7!

I’d probs try him higher my concern has always been that he is a very loose player

He plays shots from ball one, which is very risky for a top order player

I tend to agree about first class records but we’ve picked loads off that recently and it hadn’t worked

Malan one half decent pick has average record

I just think he has the mentality and ability, let him work out a method in the test arena not against Derbyshire, you know what I mean

You'd play Vince but not Stokes? I know he's had a poor IPL but still....

James Vince is the natural successor to Ben Stokes, that's the kind of visionary thinking we need to get back to number 1 in the world.

Cook
Hameed
Root
Bairstow
Malan
Stokes
Livingstone
Ali ?????
Broad
Wood
Anderson

I understand why people are saying stick with Stoneman or go with the form player in Gubbins but, honestly, how many opening batsman who are in form have been getting picked and then they don't produce when they get their chance. Hameed looked absolute test class when he got his and was unfortunate to get injured.
Sooner rather later he will find his way back into the test side, so why not sooner if no one else is banging the door down? Especially as he's an excellent player of spin and the next three series England play are Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka.

Root needs to move to 3 and Bairstow needs to be in the top 5 given his ability. Livingstone needs to be given a chance and Vince should be nowhere near the team.

I've no idea who to pick now Leach is injured so I've gone with Mo.

I'd pick Wood ahead of Woakes simply because you need to play Wood while he's fit, which he probably won't be by the time the summer's over.

You have to give the lad a chance, pick him when he's in some kind of form but when he's not is borderline cruelty.

Hameed?

The lad can't even get in Lancashire's side

Nowhere near the squad, or even the Lions

Haway mate.

He can barley get in his county side, he is nowhere near the test team

I don't think he is good enough personally, against pace bowling anyway
