Yorkshire v Durham : CC September 24

Well here we are. Final game of the season in Leeds for 4 days. Remember folks it's a 10.30am start

We are 2 points behind Hampshire, 6 behind Yorkshire, and 10 behind Sussex and Essex. Hampshire host Surrey who still have a chance of winning the title albeit slim.

Forecast looks decent for September so I'm expecting plenty of cricket and plenty opportunities to score points which obviously we need to do.

Do we play the same team or would you bring Parky or Driss back in as our spin option?

Does Ackermann come into contention?

Gay needs 59 runs to reach 1000 and Leeds needs 71.

It's going to be an interesting 4 days and fingers crossed the lads can survive.

What little tinkering that's possible with team selection isn't going to enable us to win the game i.e. take 20 wickets-a shocking inditement but painfully true. Realistically we require 3 more points than Hants -level on points and Hants would overhaul on the tie break of less defeats.
Given Hants have only acquired 12 batting points this season, realistically they should acquire 12 points if they manage a draw. Our target then is minimum 15 points - 4 or 5 batting points required. Not confident.
Although unlike @Voice of fair play I can't claim to be a mind reader I'm fairly convinced Bostock's proposal on reduced CC games will go through and we'll be playing in a split 1st division next season.

If I was Yorkshire and knowing only a draw was needed I would prepare the flattest of tracks, especially with Durham's limited bowling attack.

As I can't see anything other than a draw at best I'm hoping for 5 batting bonus points and Surrey doing the business for us.

The important issue if we cant win is to get 3 more points than Hampshire. Surrey will surely be going all out so hopefully Hampshire won't get much from that game.

As others have said, the big story really will be the wickets, both here and perhaps more interestingly at Southampton. I expect Headingley to be flat, Yorkshire won’t want to risk losing the game and getting relegated by producing a result pitch - whereas Hampshire have a real dilemma. With the addition of Sundar and the likely return of Dawson they’ve got an obvious spin bowling advantage over Surrey, but then on any pitch that turns, the ball will also seam and Surrey have easily the best seam attack going around. Twin that with Hampshire’s poor batting record this year and they’ll want to be careful not to ruin their own chances of bonus points. I don’t think Hampshire will want to go too far down the route of preparing a result pitch in case they lose, but they’ll still be very wary of producing an absolute featherbed incase we win and they’re stuck going absolutely nowhere.

Ultimately I do feel like Hampshire’s position is the most difficult position to be in going into the final round.

What are the tie breakers if two teams are level on points? Could happen. I know wins is the first, after that is it fewer defeats?

The bowling intrigues me most, I think we may see Bailey, I’d say why not given he can’t really do much worse than anyone else has done and up to this point there’s only really Raine who can take any credit for his efforts this season. Others have had moments, but nobody has done it for a prolonged time. Potts will share the new ball with Raine but he’s been really underwhelming for two years now and I’m of the opinion that England have really messed him up as they did with Plunkett all those years ago.

I wouldn’t be upset if they dropped Conners, but I’ve got zero faith in Hogg. Is Minto nowhere near the squad? It’s a mystery as to why Yusuf or Wagner couldn’t have been retained - or even why Neasham/Foulkes weren’t considered, assuming they weren’t.

We’ve GOT to play four frontline seamers in my view, Headingley traditionally doesn’t spin a great deal, but if we’re expecting it to be flat we’ll have to have an spin option.

I wouldn’t be totally against bringing back Ackermann for his three-dimensional ability, alongside a Parky/Drissell but you can’t really drop any of the batsmen. I’d love to see the club go totally left field and pick Sowter for his mystery/variation. Always wondered why he isn’t afforded more red ball opportunities.

I feel like any team I pick would contain 12/13 men and that’s not allowed 🤦‍♂️

Is Bedingham available ?
Can Gay ( for once ) back up a hundred with another ?
Was McKinneys ton just a flash in the pan or shoukd we bring back Ackermann

That is a truly poor squad 2 spinners one who brought up a double ton. Bailey not ready and Conner’s is awful.

Such a said state of affairs genuinely struggling to see how you make a viable bowling line up out of that 15.

North & Bostock out I was looking back at the quality of our title winning teams. They where superb and also full of local talent the last side all 4 seamers born within 20 miles of our ground.

They have really failed the club badly and we are so far away from what made us a proud and successful club it’s very sad to see!

Apparently the rumour that Ed Davey is joining club is just a rumour! But it is disappointing that the genuine supporters of the club are continually ignored.Dont think it bothers the club. That is why l have stayed away for years and support grass roots cricket who appreciate your support
