Years following the lads

I was a liverpool supporter till me Dad told me I could never go to Liverpool.
I'd say 35 years possibly, first listening to us on the radio with me Dad's headphones on.

Edit. I think he stood over me to make sure I was listening properly 😅

Aug 25 1979 when I went to my first match at Roker Park. It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster but I love the hapless fuckers, what can you do 🤷‍♂️

As I've said its 62 yrs for me. Not every game of course. I was six when zi went to my first game I think it was v Leeds clock stand paddocks with my Uncle Norman. Grandad would take me for my birthday and Xmas main stand seats.
When I was eleven I was going to Roker on my own. U believable when you think about it. I used to get the train up on my own. I got filled in on the Fulwell when I was 12 cos I was stood in a 14/15 yr old s place.
I'll never forget that. I was a big lad for my age and could look after myself but didnt fight back cos there was 4vof them and they were older than me

I remember the train from hpool were always chocka.
One trip everyone was singing Goodbye Blackberry Way in the carriage. I think it was released 1968. That would make me 11.

I remember getting season tkts for me and son and daughter during Reidy Quinn and Philips eras. We would go to the games not talking about would we win but how many wed win by.
I.remembsr telling them it won't always be like this. Make the most of it.
After we won the cup we took thousands all over the country.id just started working and as a 16 yr old followed us everywhere. I was with a few hpool lads who were older than me and what a laugh we had. We had some scary moments anarl. A great time to follow us. We took thousands to every away game. In an age when hooliganism was rife and trouble was expected we looked after each other and looking back.it was happy days a nd I was proud and still am proud to tell folk that I support Sunderland AFC.

51 years for me

Third round cup tie against Chesterfield

I started work in 1974 aged 16 and before that couldn’t afford to go on my pocket money 😂

Got the Barney bus to Bishop and then went in the Sun Inn (now at Beamish I believe) for a drink before heading to Sunderland

Think we won 2 nil

Memories of Roker Park included not getting in to a game against Liverpool after travelling all the way to Sunderland 😤
Got within half a dozen places of getting into the Fulwell End before they shut the turnstile then ran all around the ground to try to get in but without luck !

Got a season ticket when the Stadium of Light opened and had one until 2019
When I gave it up as I needed a hip operation

Now get to games maybe once or twice a season

I remember getting lost as a 10 yr old after the Sunderland v Northampton match in 1965, it was an evening game and I had to make my own way home by train and bus which I’d never done as we went by car. It was in the First Division and we won 3-0.

Its 64 or 65 years for me. Still a season card holder and did so throughout the 9 years in the Championship and Division 1 despite living in Essex where I still live. The last 2 years supporting Sunderland have been the best of my life even beating 1973! I just love travelling up to Sunderland for the matches but sadly cant get tickets for away matches and now have to buy corporate or go into the home ends. Went to every Wembley appearance (apart from the COVID one where no supporters allowed) from and including 1973 and the Mercantile Credit competition. My biggest regret was not going to Budapest for the away leg of the European Cup Winners Cup in 1973. The return air fare was £35 which was about 3 weeks wages for me in those days - I simply couldnt get the money together. It makes me more determined to see them in Europe now, particularly as I am 73 with the Big C. It is because of the horrible times supporting Sunderland that make these good times even better. Haway the Lads!

My Dad took me to my first match in 1993. First season ticket and season I properly remember was 1996. So 30 years.

You get less for murder.

They were the days, dump the kid and let him use his initiative to get home
