You can twist things anyway though, I can counter it is a lot easier to regain possession playing for a good team as the opposition have less time on the ball and fewer options.
When I see a good team against us a player normally has 3 easy passes at all times due to our standing off.
 
He'd only impress in an England shirt in games where there backs would be against the wall. Against top class opposition.

That never happens in qualifiers and friendlies are meaningless. He'd never look great playing in a 2-0 win against Estonia imo.

Consistently deals with the David Silvas, Eden Hazards, Juan Mata's of the prem so I don't see why he can't play against the same if not similar players at international level
 
Of course, just to shut up the arrogant fans of 'big' clubs who look down their nose at him (and Sunderland)
