Worst Sacking of a Manager at Sunderland

What sacking of a Sunderland Manager over the years do you think has been the worst/most ill timed etc. I was proper gutted as a young un when Tom Cowie sacked Ken Knighton and then Alan Durban but realise now it was all part of being a Sunderland fan

In my time supporting SAFC (first match 1990) I can’t think of many/any that didn’t have the majority of fans in favour of them being sacked.

It's not always the sacking that seems bad, it really depends who you are replacing them with. Peter reid went very early into his last season and look who replaced him. Snowballed downhill from there

I thought at the time that Dennis Smith could have been a successful manager and was sacked too early. Time clouds your judgement like.
I’m more recent times. I liked Poyet and thought he got us playing some decent stuff .

O'Neill wasnt hounded out and nor was Keane, di Cano was still so popular when he was sacked that the bloke shouting at him at west brom had to go to the newspapers to deny he was calling him a cu'nt because he was taking so much abuse. Allardyce...

Aside from that though yeah, the fans have been on their backs due to their continued inability to raise us out of our sustained mediocrity.

I agree. But he was also at an iconic club. It's the mid table Premier managers who are fucked when a multi millionaire player decides he wants to fuck off I feel sorry for (ok not sorry but you know what I mean)

I was disappointed when Keane left. I was shocked when O’Neill left. Although he needed to go, I was actually a bit surprised that Murray sacked Reid.

The rest of them, I’ve either been not shocked or not arsed.

In retrospect it was a bit premature to get rid of Cloughie so early in his coaching/managerial career. He was doing well with the youth team and I wish we'd hung on to him for another 30 years or so!
