Workington on a wet afternoon

Other way round. Barrow have been in Cumbria since 1973, before this it was part of Lancashire.

Was referring to where the football club base themselves these days!
They were training at Knutsford, Cheshire but moved their base to Salford last summer. They only go to Barrow on a matchday.

In terms of the comments on the area :)I'm from Spenny area and I can confirm Whitehaven is a nicer place to live than there for 100% sure. People are welcoming and decent (not saying Spenny aren't) less crime, and of course it is on the sea which gives it that extra dimension of beaches and the marina.

It is totally off the motorway and the nightlife has gone completely downhill over last 15 years but overall I'm pretty sure there are far far worse towns in the UK.

Edit - they are all jam eaters like

Basically, because I'm not from there, but to me Whitehaven does seem a better place in comparison to live (up-keep, shops) from what I know & have been told by Cumbrians over recent years. [Apologies to the Worky folk]

They go on a Friday - have a training session / usually at Holker Old Boys (North West Counties side) or the old BAE sports club, do some school visits/coaching and then stay in a hotel on the Friday night.

Luckily for them it should get better when they open that coal mine. Wouldn’t hurt to reopen a few round our way anarl

Interesting. I suppose it's working results wise but not great for fostering a relationship with the town, even though it is in the middle of nowhere

There are a 8 or so Sunderland lads living over here from a Sunderland cavity wall insulation company. Some of them definitely go to the match.

I sometimes wonder if they are on here.

Great news. Anything to bring comfort to those North West coastal towns like cavity wall insulation, central heating and double glazing. When I worked in Whitehaven it lacked those in abundance. On a positive note, at least 8 more new members of Cumbria Branch.

They all drive back to North East on Friday afternoon so don't get the cumbria bus over. I only know all this as I live about 100 yards from hotel they stay in over here.

On a football front, Worky have had it rough over the last decade or so. When they were battling relegation with Barrow in the Conference North, their manager left to go to Barrow and changed the latter's fortunes and stopped up whilst Worky went down, then three consecutive failures in the play-offs (including a final defeat to Salford City just as the Class of 92 lot got involved), another relegation after that, Covid cancellation ruining the season where they were about 10 points clear and, finally (!), failing to beat the already-relegated, bottom of the league team in their final game last season and missing out on automatic promotion as a result, followed by another play-off failure that involved conceding an equaliser deep into injury time (and subsequent ET goal concession to lose the game). This season they've got the behemoth that is the reformed Macclesfield that are making light work of the division so they'll need to rely on the play-offs if they want to go up.

From my limited knowledge, it seems more than a decade that Worky have had a torrid time re: football, club survival & business wise. On a relative subject, the Town itself, after heading downwards is showing (very) slight signs of improvement in some of the outlying areas where business has opened, although still a very long way to go to get back to what it was.

Work with Deggsy who was Workington manager at the time of the Salford PO loss. There always seemed to be money clubs blocking their way to promotion from the Northern Prem; FCUM, Salford, Darlington, etc. When he talks about that season you can tell he’s still pissed off at the credit those two at Salford got for getting them up, when the reality is their budget was ridiculous compared to Workington’s and they only won it due to a goalkeeping howler in the last minute.
