Wolves Technical Director on Academy Challenges outside the big clubs

The bit about the U16 player agent fees is absolutely appalling.

As we aren't immune from this at all. There needs to be something done especially if FIFA are going to force teams to field homegrown U21 players at all times.

Agents and money in the game is only going to kill it further

What's the alternative? He said theres nothing they can do but he also said they resisted offers last year. And the player said what he wants aye they are asking a lot but if thats what hes going to get elsewhere then why wouldn't he ask for it?

Got no sympathy really, clubs release players when they want

Think you’re missing the point.
It plays into the hands of the elite clubs, it makes clubs less self sustainable, it stops clubs competing on the pitch through their own developed players.
What’s more it ensures less British players turn into full time pros as more and more elite players don’t get the chances and fade away.
Do you think Chris Rigg would have seen much first team football at Man Utd in the last 3years???

It’s one of those that swings both ways really as academy’s release players by the thousands and with no real safety net as a lot of them will have seen football as all they have known. I don’t know the answers, but the system on all sides is flawed.

Yeah I know it's happened for years though hasn't it? Look how stacked Chelsea and Man City academies have been, they just farm players to sell on. The solution would probably be more £, compensate the clubs that lose players regardless of age

The rules need to change but the PL teams basically blackmail the EFL into agreeing to what they want. It needs a limit on the amount of players clubs are allowed out on loan and how many loans a player can have before they are 21 but again they wont agree to this.

Also its a bit rich from Wolves considering their best youth player current is Mateus Mané who it seems was at Rochdale youth system before Wolves. Currently there is a pecking order and they are happy to take from below them but aren't happy when those above come looking. Seems they just want excuses to cover over the cracks.

I thought there was now a limit on the number of players that can be loaned out? Sure it was in response to how Chelsea operated.

Just from AI but yea it’s 6 international loans but;

The Youth Exemption: Players aged 21 and under, as well as "club-trained" players (those who have been at the club for three years between the ages of 15 and 21), are completely exempt from the 6-player limit.

But even if they force the 6 multi club ownership will find ways around it im sure. Chelsea and co see kids as commodities now, they know 0.001% will be good enough for them but 0.1% will be good enough for professional football and they can make money from those.

Did those Leeds United lads who were poached by Chelsea (last big media furore that I can recall) ever make it in the game? Even that must be coming up for 20 years ago now.

Just looked it up - found an article

Actually was 20 years ago, man
Those 2 stories just make the water more muddy, I'm guessing they got money to move and it was probably the best decision long term as injuries and sadly just lack of talent meant they never made it, yes they may have if they stayed at leeds but history shows they probably wouldnt have and would have been poorer all for it. I'd much rather players stay at their local clubs and have the chance but if somebody offered life changing money at 16/17 in a sport where a single tackle can end your career its going to be very hard to turn down.

My son got released and went to find his own club after now they are starting with my seven year old

It’s brutal and academies are guilty of mismanaging players from a young age. I can see why they move.

I can see both sides to this coin.

One point to take from that is the statement that Leeds were so financially screwed, they were on the verge of closing their academy. Bates et al seemed to be actively trying to get rid of the young lads, other teams were trying to make the most of Leeds financial situation so Leeds tried to claim they were being poached.

Also Gibbs-White stayed at Wolves, they ended up loaning him out and then selling him off to Forest...who did actually bother to use the lad.
