To be fair I don't think the actually went as far as meeting him. I think they were savvy enough to ask him for proof of funds and his gold chip backers before they wasted any time on him. I seem to remember that his "bid" became unstuck at that point.

It's pretty obvious that anyone making a serious bid would expect to be asked such a question on first contact and would be ready to provide full proof without any delay or bullshit.
