Will Gidman

Encouraging words from Gidman about 're-establishing the Academy.

No mention in the Gloucestershire pre-view of DeLeede going there.

Didn't realise it was behind a paywall but this is the gist.

So, Gidman knows what he's walking into. "I'm following in the footsteps of two unbelievably successful gentlemen," he tells The Cricketer.

There will be changes, because Gidman is his own man – and the game waits for no one. "Everything has to keep moving forward," he says. "We have a really impressive legacy here of producing fantastic players. That won't carry on if we stand still, but you have to do it in the Durham way."

For that, he uses (and creates) the word "Durham-ness". At its best, the title-winning sides were littered with local heroes.

"The talent is already there," he says. "It's just our job now to nurture it. I keep talking to the staff about making sure we develop them with that Durham-ness about their character. Making sure we're developing not just them as players, but them as people – a great Durham people, who understand

what it is to represent .

"The word I keep using with the staff is legacy. We're a club now that have developed an incredible legacy of producing high-quality cricket players, not just for Durham but for England. The northeast has a rich history: they produce great sportspeople – men and women, boys and girls. It's just part of our culture up here."

"I think a lot of development can be done by tapping into our history, as a club, and inviting ex-players in," says Gidman. "The Durham locals, the people that just live and breathe Durham cricket: they've been the heart and soul of this place for a long time. So, I think that's a really exciting idea, making sure we tap into that history for our players to learn from the people themselves. This club has in a short space of time developed a really rich history. So, let's use that, let's tap into that. It'll be as a resource."

Indeed, he insists that it'd be "unbelievably ignorant" of him not to get around the region's many local clubs to show his "gratitude for the priceless role they play in producing unbelievably exciting cricketers for us".

Good luck to the lad. Let's hope he is given a free hand without any interference from North.
Faint hope, cos that's what bosses do. Set guidelines, direction, provide resources and timelines, etc. There are always constraints on Dons, Capos and Under Bosses.
