Why doesn’t a top manager work for nothing

At a lower league club and get them promoted to the championship at least. No real money to spend and maybe even a salary cap. It would just be down to great coaching and managerial skills.

1 he does not need the money he’s a multi millionaire already , he could be paid a nominal fee plus expenses

2 he has achieved so much in the game already, the kudos and goodwill would be FAB for said manager.

ive always wondered ..... sigh
By the time you have established yourself as a great manager you're probably in your 50's/60's. They probably have not only their lifestyle to maintain but children/grandkids to support. Not many great managers earned decent sums as players so probably isn't start really earning decent coin until their 40's.
Possibly hard to justifying sacking off a multi million pound job to turn up at Northampton or Yeovil and train shithouses on council pitches

If you're a big name in football it's not worth the time or stress of having to drop down. Lower league football is stressful for a manager. The ones who enjoy it and do well are the ones who spent their playing careers down there and know what to expect and live with. You're on the road all the time whether it's for x3 games a week, or doing the scouting yourself + routine training and board meetings. At the top level there's so much delegation because they can afford specialists and the manager is more of figurehead who ensures everything runs smoothly. Alex Ferguson never ran a training session, Pep and Mourinho can have a blank cheque, Capello was all about tactics and treating football like chess. Tactical obsession is big at the top level because small margins make big differences when players are as good as each other.... but in lower league football when they are as bad as each other it matters far less. They'd be exposed like a fish out of water because it's been so long since they had to work at that level.

You leave your job then and go and work for a shitter company for nowt.

Thought not

I just don't get why some people think football players and managers, should behave differently to anyone else in society.

They are not fans, it's a job and a career to them, that's it.

Would you like to work 80+ hour weeks for no pay, get abused on social media, be constantly on the road and not see your family on Saturdays for no wages?

Personally, I'd be looking for such an offensively high salary that I could retire early and get those years back later.

you need to get out more mate

Why won't Lewis Hamilton take a year off and drive a taxi?

He could give everyone a free fare because he doesn't need the money and he could use his skills to get them to their destination quickly without having the team build the best car.

Utterly ridiculous, most managers have done this already and been successful in doing so hence they are at bigger clubs, why drop back down the divisions and work for nothing??

The OP post is madness but I'm not sure that's necessarily true these days. In a world where Zidane, Guardiola, Pirlo, Gerrard (lesser so the latter) etc get big clubs right off the bat. It's the old 'can they do it on a cold night in Stoke' scenario and honestly, I doubt they could and nor should they have to.

The main reason is that it could easily go very badly and they would be found out.

Football managers use a lot of smoke and mirrors to appear to be "great" at what they do. It's mainly money and luck.

Look at Moyes and Mourhino. What has changed to make them so shit now?

Also, they are professionals and don't really GAF about about "kudos and goodwill".
