Why does the club give out false attendance figures?

Maybe they should change the announcement that they during the second half from, "today's attendance is ...", to "tickets sold today is ..."
The announcement is misleading imo

This is absolutely the most disappointing part of attending a match at the minute. Ellis Short needs to sort this otherwise i'll start thinking he's doing a bad job.

Is it a rule though? Most clubs give the actual away attendance or number of visitors. We have had sellouts but the actual numbers excludes tickets not scanned.

Does this rule only apply to home games does anyone know?

Above is an article that claims it so but the link to premier league rules is now dead and the author could not find the rule in Football League regulations.

The author is a Blackpool FC fan and has an interest in this matter due to an ongoing boycott of the club in protest at the owners and wanted accurate attendance figures.

Yep I know what you’re say8bg but away figures tend to be realistic.

attendances always seem accurate to me based on looking at it by eye and the figure given, and I’ve been eyeing the attendances up since the day the stadium opened. Total myth that they’re wildly exaggerated.
I think this.

People forget how big the ground is, and some sections are usually pretty full.

I think we all think this and I think we're all correct. The figures probably include no-show season ticket holders, amongst other things.

Away figures are more accurate because you don't have to take into account non-attending season ticket holders plus fewer away tickets available make it easier to be accurate.

I'd have thought it would be something that HMRC would insist on. VAT is due on the actual sales; that is on tickets sold, irrespective of whether they're used. It gives them a clear audit trail to ensure that VAT isn't being underdeclared.

That’s good as I’m interested in travelling supporters and how many we take and how many we see here. Much more interesting to me .

if you buy an away ticket you're alot more likely to go than if you've got a season ticket and decide on the day you can't be arsed.

plus if say 10% of people fuck it off at the last minute a 2500 away attendance becomes 2250, not much of a difference compared to out of 30k it becomes 27,000

People moan that the not-quite-red-anymore seats make the club look shit, then they moan that the club isn't making our attendance look shit. Some people just like to moan.

So you have 20,000 gate but say you have 28,000 for income tax reasons.
Total ticket sales. 20000 turn up but you sell 28000 tickets, meaning you have to pay tax on the total sales. it doesn't matter if nobody turns up you still pay tax on the tickets sold, But yes it is strange when we all know that we don't currently get the attendance they say.

We don't "all know" that at all do we. Unless you have actually counted, or have some evidence.

They go by ticket-sales (which they need to know for tax purposes). Doubt the clubs care how many people actually attend their games
