In the modern age though, calling someone black because they are 1/8th black and 7/8ths white seems inappropriate to be honest.
Maybe you're saying defining by race is an obsolete concept , I hope you are but then your question would be irrelevant wouldn't it ?
Another way of looking is that many 'white' people fail to recognise on a felt level that many identify against us and our culture ,they simply do not aspire to be 'white ' in looks , manner or rationale . In fact they see us as , warlike, distasteful and uncultured as a race ( they may have a point )
Watched a " who do you think you are " about some 'mixed race ' DJ going back to Africa and meeting a tribal elder . He had thought he was black all his life until this man reflected to him his white enculturation in how he stood , spoke , approached , even held objects . He gave him shirt shrift for " being" white but then became sympathetic over his 'loss'.
Why shouldn't Obama identify as black , it's one of the choices , or does whitey even want to define on what grounds that choice can be made.
