Why do suspected criminals say 'No Comment'?

The one that always amazes me though is when they are asked directly if they committed the offense and they still say ‘no comment’ instead of saying ‘No!’

Yes. And you'd do well to heed the same advice if you were unlucky to find yourself in a situation regarding the police. Police want a result.

Safer to say nothing because if you are guilty then you wont want to give the police a helping had.Secondly you could say too much and incriminate yourself further on a unrelated offence.

There is a booked called The Right To Remain Innocent which says why you should say nothing even if innocent and is written by a defence lawyer

It may harm their defence if they do not mention when questioned something which they later rely on in court
