When did Football peak?

The historians say 1970 was the peak when Brazil won the World Cup. In terms of football, we'll never see anything like that again.

Personally, 1997-2006. Before the oligarchs and oil money. Footballers still seemed human but mostly the nostalgia of going to games by myself and all that.

Mind you, August 2024 to the current moment isn't too bad. :cool:
 

Mid 00s to early 2010s

- Wolves had some decent spells
- Chelsea and Liverpool played out some classic CL matches with ridiculous scorelines
- Felt like England could actually win a tournament / I was still going out to pubs to watch tournaments
- The Liverpool 2005 CL final
- "Proper" forwards like Van Persie, Drogba, Ronaldo, Thierry Henry
- Newcastle were largely shite
- Chelsea had fkd football's financial landscape but this was mainly before Man City warped it further
 
Early 2000s. Sports science had improved the players, good quality pitches but still a contact sport. You watch a game from then and compare it to today and it's a completely different sport.

In terms of watching, before my time but I liked the 80s. Pitches were real levellers and abh regularly overlooked both on and off the pitch

I personally think late 90’s early 2000’s before diving and play acting in general became so common but the standard of pitches, stadiums and the football had improved to a point where it was more enjoyable
