What kind of bike do I need?

Amateur question.

I want a bike to go out on down the seafront/along the riverside.

Not arsed for going off road etc.

What should I get?

Me I love a Boardman, I've had more expensive bikes but Boardman's just seem to fit me so well so I think you just need to find your fit but if it is just for leisure I'd consider a Boardman as they are high spec for the price. Get disc brakes and kevlar tyres so you don't have to be faffing about

Difficult to answer without more information.

What sort of terrain is this? You say you will not be going off road but are the surfaces nice and flat or broken, cracked and bumpy?
Will you be going out in all weathers or only when it's dry?
How many miles will you be doing?

I'd get a hybrid, best of both worlds. The seat and the handle bars are a bit more comfortable than a mountain bike and the tyres can handle more terrain than on a road bike. The seating position is more suited for casual riding. Road bikes are crap, especially the state of our roads, plus you look like a bellend if you wear all the gear and hog the road
