We had Gayle, Mitrovic and Murphy trying to fit into the lone striker role but Murphy played his part.

He was a back up striker that scored 5 goals, he played as a target man rather than a poacher. Most of his appearances were from the bench and most of that is when we were closing down the game.

Nobody is saying he's mint and should be a starting striker for anyone, just that he's a useful lad to have in the squad for what will likely be a modest fee.
 
Would just about sum Moyes up, Take us down without any fight then sign mag players ffs just kill me now lost the will to live with him in charge

So if you don't want us to go through the short-term tactic of buying geriatrics for a quick fix, rather than building a team from youngsters and maybe having to wait a couple of seasons for a promotion challenge, you're a 'f***ing thick deluded cunt'?

Can't you do both? buy a n experienced striker to come off the bench when needed, and a young hunry striker to be your first choice?

Sure, but the post I responded to seemed to imply that if you weren't in favour of signing the likes of Murphy, you must be expecting top players to sign, which is utter crap.

Personally, I believe the way forward, as painful as it will be, is to build a young side from scratch and avoid the temptation to rely on buying old players for a quick fix.
I'm prepared for a couple of seasons in the Championship if it means we can have a fresh start with a young team.

That's fair enough, but there's value in signing experienced pros like Murphy. Someone who knows the league and can settle nerves or whatever. Too many inexperienced younger lads would see you more nervous in tight games, might see you struggling to bounce back from defeats etc.

I agree that if you're wanting to change the direction of the club you need to change the transfer policy, but Murphy makes sense for Sunderland this season, imo

I see your point. The trouble is, SAFC would buy Murphy on a five year contract, pay him 50k a week and guarantee him regular starts!

If I'm honest, I can see him ending up at Ipswich or Birmingham or somewhere like that, he'll go for c£1m and everyones happy.

We still need some experience at this level and Murphy has that as well as scoring goals in this league
