Wear-Tees Derby

No, the criteria I am using is that there was more of an edge v Boro than any other club bar the Mags when I started going in the mid 80s.
"Boro beware keep out" was painted on the wall of the Fulwell End I always remember.

Last time we played down there, still a load of edge and bother.

Its nothing like playing Norwich
What about playing Leeds? Why isn’t Leeds a derby? Would Harrogate be a derby? Where’s your geographical line?

Neither of those are classed as being in the north east. Boro is 20-odd miles down the road.
Also, re your 20-odd miles, my understanding of north east geography having lived there for years is that Middlesbrough feels like a world away. No-one from Newcastle, Sunderland, Tyneside or Wearside has any real reason to go there and there are no amazing transport connections. What there is is a Tyne -Wear urban area in which fans of both clubs socialise and work. Middlesbrough feels as distant as Leeds in that respect. There are probably more Manchester United and Liverpool fans in Tyne and Wear than Middlesbrough fans. There’s just no roots for a rivalry.
Yes but nothing like Boro in my experience. Newcastle is a walk in the park compared to Boro and I've been to just about every one at both since the late 80s
It’s hyped up because they have a radgie element of fans and are desperate for a derby. That doesn’t make it a derby. The Sunderland Middlesbrough matches I’ve been to have been pretty tame, like another game. Newcastle versus Sunderland is about 100 levels above. I bet most Mag fans would say the same

The levels of passion and hatred at Sunderland v Newcastle games is way above Middlesbrough Sunderland (or Newcastle). Newcastle Sunderland is a bona fide proper derby in every sense of the word. It’s absolutely vitriolic and raw and takes up the week before and after (plus bragging rights), with fans working and socialising with each other in local areas.

Middlesbrough has none of that.

We are never going to agree mate. Loads in the 90s used to go clubbing there as it was the place for house music. It also had the best clothes shops so again, loads went down regularly.
You evidently haven't experienced what I and many others experienced and that's fair enough but I'll tell you as someone who has been to just about every away game at Boro and Newcastle since 1988, there is no comparison with regards to bother.

Your likeness to Norwich was utterly ridiculous, with the greatest respect.

Middlesbrough generally get very little mention on here. When they won the LC and got to a UEFA Cup final, we barely batted an eyelid. If that was the Mags, we’d comment and whinge ad naueseum. People don’t give a shite about Middlesbrough man.

Just the Riverside (twice). But if your criteria is “was there bother at the match?”, we must have played a derby most weeks in the 70s and 80s.
We got a mention when we were struggling and it looked like we were going to drop down to League One.

How did that work out for you btw? 😆

I've attended numerous Wear/Tees derbies over the last 40 years and it has always felt exactly that ... a derby ... to me and all the Boro supporters I know. What's more I'm certain it will always be that way. That passionate desire to win has always transcended itself to the Boro management team and players for decades.

If some Sunderland supporters want to underplay it by deeming it not as a derby and just another game, that's absolutely fine by myself and the other Boro supporters ... it is simply playing into Boro's hands.

Everyone connected with the Boro on and off the field are always massively up for these games. If the Sunderland supporters and players can't match that, then you are always going to be at a disadvantage in these derby matches. Don't just take my word for it though, the lessons from history provide evidence of it.

Boro's recent record of WWWWWD is proof enough of that ... but it goes back further. I got my first Boro season ticket in 1973/74 and since then Boro's record against Sunderland in all competitions reads:

Played 52. Won 29. Drawn 11. Lost 12.

Given that the two clubs have been roughly equally in standing when they have met over that period, those are quite remarkable statistics.

Long may it continue ... roll on "Derby Day!"

Aye, it's comedy gold to be fair.
couldn’t think of anything more embarrassing to have to wait 9 years to have a go at some fans who literally couldn’t give a shit about you while your convinced of some fake rivalry.
Enjoy your special moment fella👍
How did it go today by the way?

Oh dear I've touched a nerve 🤭 I think it's hilarious personally.

Why are you bothered about how it went for us today, you don't give a shit remember?

You’re right you’ve completely got me rattled, while you were desperately trying to get something going, I couldn’t help but have a look at your score today and it reminded me how shit you were.
Did you struggle against Stoke in the week as well🤔
