We need a new who can do the job post

I don't think we need to be looking at any of the big names that are getting bandied about atm (not that any of them would come). Just about every average league one manager we've come up against has managed to organise the team, stick to a game plan and match us. I'd take an Ainsworth on a short contract with the incentive of a longer contract if we go up. If he fails he's lost nothing as he'll get work at the likes of Wycombe.

If Ross goes, I like the idea of Ainsworth as a replacement. Phil Parkinson is available, as is Nigel Adkins.

Sentimental appointment? Look at Solksjaer at Man Utd

Also was another thread on this really necessary MODs merge and/or delete

Wilder at Sheff United Smith at villa. Phillip's is highly rated as a coach. Gives me a bit more hope than managing a Norwegian team

This post just illustrates how supporters disagree even before any appointment is made.

And then when we do make an appointment, then all the "why the fuck have we appointed him" idiots will be out declaring they will be proved right (and that they know more about running a football club than anyone)!

The truth is its not as easy as it seems from your keyboard guys........

Well, these ‘keyboard guys’ couldn’t do a much worse job appointing staff than the club.
I’m not sure how thinking an incoming manager is a bad choice makes anyone an idiot, either.

I don't think it needs massive surgery marra. Back to the old basics, a coherent plan and a sprinkling of shithousery as I can't believe how naive we've been. This squad strikes me as bunch who need someone to install belief in them and they'll flourish. With all respect to Ross he's not the most engaging of blokes.

I think the teams in League 1 (including us) are much of a muchness. That's one possible explanation as to why the league is so competitive and (with the current exception of Ipswich, but there's still time for that to change) why the results are so topsy-turvy. The tired line about us having the best squad in the division didn't stand up to scrutiny last season and with a weaker squad this season, it doesn't stand up again (remind me: how many of our players were in the League1 squad of the season again?). We failed last season, but by the slenderest of margins. It's tweaking we need, not radical surgery. Whether Ross can do it, I really don't know. But I do know we need the right reaction from the players, pdq.

Not familiar with either really, Smith was an established manager at Brentford maybe? And dont think Wilders first job in management was Sheff Utd (might be wrong though). Also i’d love Phillips to be successful here but personally cant see him getting it anytime soon and think an established manager is the way to go, maybe with Phillips as a number 2

Doubt he would come on a short contract though. Giving up relative stability for this anyone with any sense coming into it in a position of strength would want security or they likely just wouldn't bother. He'd have to have an ego the size of a mountain to take it on without the security of a longer contract at the moment. not sure his record warrants it either tbf.

Whilst I kind of agree with what Ainsworth might bring I want someone who has experienced the pressure either in the NE or at a club with big crowds and expectation so they come here and know what it's like to work somewhere that's pretty intense. Too many come here and freeze having done well elsewhere and pressure gets to them, it then sees them retract into a shell and not go about things the way they have previously.

The problem there is though you're probably going to have ask someone to step down to a level they're not too enthusiastic about. You could probably convince someone who see's it as long term project, but as it stands I doubt we can sell tham that.
