Warm ups in cricket

30 mins they’ve pissed about at the Oval today. Football etc

What’s the point? Do they do warm ups of more than a few mins between innings? What happens if you’re team bats all day and then you have to bowl at 530pm? You don’t get 30 mins

Cricket does not help itself

Ben Stokes stopped this in the England side like that.

Maybe controversial in here, but a warm up serves many purposes. When I used to be skipper it was noticeable when lads rocked up 20 mins before for a tab and a sandwich before going straight out to field or bat, we were often slow out the blocks and playing catch up for the rest of the day.

When we did it properly and got there 45-60 mins before, had 20 mins run about together, a chat about the game, all before the toss, we genuinely looked a different team. Also many lads have a lot going on at home and work, me included, so it was a great way to switch off from that just for a few hours and enjoy having your head and body in the game.

I get its not for all levels, but surely leagues with players aspiring for higher (NEPL + top couple of DCL divs), I don't see the problem.

Warm ups in cricket should be banned imo.

A few years ago did my ankle during the warm up before a game - didnt play again that season and was in agony with it for about 8 months. Not injured myself that badly since.

* this has nothing at all to do with me being a fat kernt at all ;)

Yeah i agree, ive even noticed it with junior cricket too, some teams have the kids out with proper fielding drills, or the bowlers getting properly warmed up bowling to the keeper, others its just a few throw downs if your lucky,

If someone who knows what they are doing is leading it then it is worth it. Get some stretching done, batters doing throw downs and bowlers launching a few at the keeper. As others have said gets you ready to play instead of tipping up 5 minutes before with a tab for warm up

Sure. But professional cricket where they have already had nets etc and it’s rained for 2 hours? Do they then need another 40min kick about?

Totally agree mate.

Us at Wearmouth 2nds are trying to get a proper warm up before every game now. Even little daft fielding drills like high catchs help loosen the cobwebs of the weekly grind. The yoga stretches help no end too.

The difference being, of course, that these are professional athletes who have been kicking round the ground waiting for the game to start. They've had hours to get themselves together.

The delays between the ground being fit tomplay and the players getting on the field, is something cricket really needs to address.

This x1,000,000.

I suspect the vast majority of First Class cricket grounds will all have gyms in them now, so there’s no reason why players can’t use those facilities to get themselves warm/loose before the start of play.
