Retiring from the Guardian today. He’ll still be on TMS.
I always enjoy reading and listening to Vic.
My favourite story was when he was playing against Pakistan he was facing their leggie, probably Quadir, and as he faced the ball it went something like this.
“Great a full tools outside off, I’ll smash it over the covers.
nope, half volley, I can caress through the covers.
Oh shit it’s a good length.
Christ a googlie.
bollocks there goes my stumps.”
The next day he was reading the papers and one journalist wrote.
‘I don’t know what Marks read at Oxford, but it certainly wasn’t Legspin.’

Along with Atherton my favourite cricket writer, you can just hear his voice everytime you read his piece

that’s a shame

he’s way under used on TMS, he should be one of their frontline commentators

has anyone got his book, I’ve only not got it yet as I thought it might be a lot of in jokes from country cricket from his era?

I mentioned reading 'Original Spin' in another thread on here a few months ago and would definitely recommend it. I'm an age where I can remember Vic being a member of that great one day Somerset side of the late 70s/early 80s and so it was really interesting to read not only of the triumphs of that era but also the break up of the team.

It also offers some interesting insights into Peter Roebuck.

I’ve got the book for Xmas. Somerset were my team in the 1970s and 1980s, until the split. A great side, so I’m looking forward to reading it. Marks was a great member of that team. Not a bad bowling record in ODI cricket either.

That's a shame, he's a fantastic writer and commentator and will be a sad loss.

There's not many good ones about now IMO. The "New Breed" are miles off the likes of Marks, Agnew, Johnston etc.

Atherton is the best around by far, absolutely fantastic.

I was fortunate to speak to Nigel Popplewell in 1990 and he said that VM would become a top national journalist...spot on.
