The Vendee Globe non stop around the world yacht race set off this afternoon. Good luck to Alex Thompson in the Hugo Boss sponsored boat. He is the only British entry this time round. Some challenge of human endurance this race is. Safe sailing to all.

Day one, just past 24 hours sailing and Alex Thompson is just in the lead. Canny way to go yet but gan on son.

Do you ever get that sinking feeling that no one is bothered?

Ps. Keep us posted marra, haway Alex lad.

Who wouldn't fancy a go on one of these beauties. Formula One for the sea.

Day three. Leaders are now about 120 miles north of Madeira Alex has dropped down to 8th spot but is only 30 nautical miles from the front. He decided to stay a bit closer to the Portuguese coast hoping for the wind to be a bit stronger but it died on him so dropped back.

Day four. The leaders are now south of Madeira and are starting to get the strong trade wins that will propel them south into the Tropic of Cancer. Alex is lagging a bit behind after his slowing up off the Portuguese coast, currently in 8th place and 65 nautical miles behind the front runners.

Day 5. Leaders are now south of the Canary Islands and are flying along on the trade winds blowing them south. Alex is currently in 6th place, some 50 nautical miles behind the leader but has set the fastest day so far in the race covering 412 nautical miles in the last 24 hours (474 ordinary miles ) Go on Alex son!!!

THE BOSS IS BACK…
FRIDAY 11 NOVEMBER 2016, 17H22
The duel between Vincent Riou and Armel Le Cléac’h at the head of the Vendée Globe fleet has swung in favour of the foiling Banque Populaire VIII skipper Le Cléach as the NE Trade Winds strengthened this afternoon 280 miles SW of the Canary Islands, but the leading pair might well be looking in the rear-view mirror, fearing the black missile that is Alex Thomson’s Hugo Boss. After a strategic error lost him miles, Thomson has been quickest since last night, clawing back 20 miles on the lead duo and getting himself back into the match, lying third this Friday afternoon.

One week in and Alex heads the pack by about 40 nautical miles. Done some 2504 n m in the week. If he hadn't had to make up the lost time earlier then he could have been well ahead. However, good luck for the rest Alex. Equator next.
