It is the boy who cried wolf for me when it comes to Vaughan though
Not for me, lot easier when you have 3 90mph bowlers.

Maybe so. But the point is that if you are getting the short stuff you should simulate it in the nets?
No idea how true it is, but it was an interesting discussion all the same

I agree he is a bit sketchy with the short stuff and needs to work on it but i think his nature is that he may get out to it but 9/10 he wont. massive difference between county game and international game as they will target the weakness more so it wont be 1/10 times he will get out but more like 3or4/10
Agree with this. Excellent captain. Strauss had a far better side at his disposal than Vaughan. Vaughan didn’t have a spinner and went into that Ashes with a very inexperienced 4 and 5.

He is a very quiet lad. Typical of lads from burnopfield
However rocky has always played the same way - very aggressively - and as a result you are always liable to out quicker than one or two who play more cautiously.

Not for me. They style with which we played under Vaughan and the excitement it generated was far more impressive than our very effective yet often attritional style under Strauss.
Both very good sides but I’d certainly pay to watch Vaughan’s before Strauss’s

Harsh on Giles that but otherwise agree, Vaughan was a great captain in my book, got the very best out of what he had, including Freddie and Pietersen and helped produced the best series we’re likely to ever see. Also scored big runs in Australia. Don’t understand the knocking him here.

He managed a side with Pietersen, Flintoff, Harmison and Trescothick in it. Somehow, he managed to keep them content and performing despite their numerous personal issues.
He didn’t have a keeper like Prior or spinner like Swann either. Swings and roundabouts.
Giles was workmanlike but pretty ordinary. Swann who Strauss had was world class.
Don’t get the knocking of Vaughan either. Was a good player and very good captain for us.
Yeah that's fair and closer to my own assessment, although I'd say he was better than just ordinary, for instance the bowlers from 2005 all talk about the job Giles did for the side and how important he was. Got a few vital runs as well.
He was certainly popular amongst the players but if you remember he was under huge scrutiny at the time of 05 Ashes. His bowling average of 40 is a fair reflection of how ordinary he was. Like you say he did chip in with some decent runs though. Certainly no mug with bat.
I don't remember to be honest mate. He was popular for a reason. My memory is that it was a fairly settled bowling attack coming back from an excellent series win in South Africa and he may have an ordinary average compared to some of the greats but it's still not bad and his economy was usually excellent if he wasn't taking wickets.

Wasn't the point about Giles as a bowler was that he did a specific job, to control the run rate. So he did just what he was asked to do so no one can have any complaints.
