The last few weeks have been sensational, great victories, the title race and great youngsters coming through, marty posted something on twitter [pre teh sussex game iirc] about 7 career bests in 8 days all for young players.
[off the top of my head borthwick & richardson career high scores, career bowling figures for wood, maiden five-fer for harrison and some others i forget] may have been more since then.

in amongst this is arshad's first two games for the county and what an entrance he has made.

career figures so far of 27-10-68-10
[that's from adding up scorecards from bbc, i had read he was 10-56?]

anyhow what i want to ask is what people think of him, we have bowled exceptionally well as a unit and dominated games through this spell, im sure his numbers reflect that to a certain degree but have we unearthed a superstar here? or is it merely he has deputised in low scoring matches against depleted sides under pressure?

suddenly an attack of onions, rushworth, stokes, wood, harrison, arshad have sprung up and from fielding two spinners religiously a year or two back now if it wasn't for scotty's sudden batting progress we would have no place for one. we don't even have enough room for all the seamers...

how high are people's hopes for him?
 

It's the bit about him being from Bradford I like the best. Muhahahaha
 
It's far too early to say of course, he's bowling on friendly wickets, with another class bowler in tandem that they won't try to score off

aye, it is obviously very early days but being an exile i haven't had a chance to see him in the flesh so fancied getting the views of some of you guys.

he opens for [is it blaydon he plays for in nepl?] and has scored a century marty said so he really could be a big deal for us.

unreal how we have endlessly produced bowlers, now it seems all rounders are what we are chucking out

iirc someone said on here that the academy is always looking for players who can do it all rather than specialists. it's a safe way to go although i'd hate to think we missed out on the next superstar batsman or bowler just because they weren't much cop at the other end.

i thought this the other day, its only stoneman who doesn't bowl [and mustard obviously] in our lineup!

depending on our lineup richardson i doubt bowls either mind, obviously this thought came to me after a game he didnt play.
 
Similarlly i was wondering who would get the nod as the 3rd frontline seamer next season?

Rushy & Onions pick themselves leaving Benny, Harrison & Wood possibly fighting for one spot...
 
He looks a cracking prospect and played well for CLS CC. He's from Bradford though. Do we know if he came to the NE as a young lad and therefore is one of our Academy products or not?

Yes I said they only took "3 dimensional cricketers" into the Academy for 5 or 6 years. Richardson did not come through the Academy system neither did Jennings who are the only other players in the team who don't do both.
Plenty more players coming through the Academy system as All Rounders. Paul Coughlin and Josh Bousfield certainly come to mind. Although Paul has had a stress fracture in his back after spending the winter in Australia, look out for him when he's back next year. before his injury he was certainly bowling quick and is now over 6'4" tall and he hits it miles with the bat.

Burnham is another one who bats and bowls.

The County run specialist batting classes from the age of U11. My lad was on the U11 one this year. They seem pretty quick to identify the kids that they think have potential but reassess them every year. Other than spin bowlers they dont do very much with the medium pacers/pace bowlers until, I'm told, they are about 14 ie when their bodies have sufficiently developed. They do run spin bowling classes or did this year again from U11 and work on technique. One of my lads pals was on it. I think his Dad said that Gareth Breese turned up to a couple of the sessions.

I agree Colonel. but when they get to 16/17 they then have to decide who to take into the Academy and who to release. They very rarely, if at all, take more than 3 players into the Academy System each year. This is where in the past the players they take into the Academy needed to be all rounders who were very good fielders.
Not at U11, U12, U13 etc age groups but WHEN THEY WERE READY TO BE OFFERED ACADEMY CONTRACTS.

Yes, thanks for that insight.

I have talked to a few of the DCB coaches and now have a greater understanding of how the process works. They made it clear to me that:

1. their process does work,
2. the Durham lads sometimes dont do so well against the other counties in the younger age groups but by the time they get to 16/17 then they start to pass a lot of them. Evidence of course is this year where they beat Kent,
3. they are given every chance to blossom and that big decisions arent made until they get to around 14/15

The more I see and hear of the Durham set up the more impressed I become.

Even if the bairns dont get to be professionals the training etc. that they get stands them in good stead for recreational cricket which helps to raise the overall standard.
