Prior's batting is great (although like many he looks awful in the subcontinent) but it really riles me when people (namely Sky) build up his keeping. He is awful behind the stumps!

Ronny Irani. Far better than Collingwood, but something always distracted him just as he was getting settled

made your mind up early then?

has improved by leaps and bounds in the last few years to the point where now im not sure i'd want any keeper in the world ahead of him

He does a decent job for England given his runs but there are 5 or 6 keepers better than him, even just in County Cricket!

Off the top of my head

Foster
Davies
Mustard
Wallace

Not saying these are better bets for England but all miles better keepers. There are local league keepers better than Prior.

you really havent watched test cricket in a while have you?

prior was a poor keeper in his first year or so at test level but has made massive strides in that area and as i said earlier, i cant think of a better test keeper atm

I have watched most of the tests he has played in and honestly think people get carried away from the commentators hyping him up when they know next to nothing about keeping. The same happened for years with Alec Stewart. Took some lovely one handers in front of 1st slip (which would have been an easy slipper anyway) but was woeful against the slower bowlers.

Prior does a steady job standing back (no better) but up to the stumps he is very snatchy and seems to panic when there is a clear stumping chance. His feet are in an awful position too. He tends to just stick his hands out and hope for the best rather than moving his feet in line with the ball. He then proceeds to practice the correct technique once he has taken it, but the next ball he reverts back to type!

The real top keepers stand up to the stumps where possible. In fairness England don't have many bowlers you can stand up to at the minute but even when Colly used to bowl a bit Prior was all over the shop to him behind the stumps.

As I said, Prior does a decent job for England, but if his runs ever dried up he would be out on his ear.

Mustard is a cracking all round player but he probably isn't "fashionable" enough for England. Too many younger up and coming keepers now so I doubt he'll play international cricket again.

Shame for the lad but good news for Durham.
