Tyne and Wear rivalry

Bald King

Winger
Heard today it goes well before the civil war...any other examples and evidence of the brooding dysfunctional relationship with them?

Newcastle held a Royal Charter from around 1100's which gave them trading privileges, especially a monopoly on coal exports. This annoyed the lords or Durham who didn't really want to pay Newcastles rates for exporting and encouraged them to try and push for exporting ports in Bishopwearmouth and Monkwearmouth. To keep it balanced Blyth and North Shields were also not allowed to export coal either.

I suppose this is the beginning of the city rivalry, but unless you had several acres of land loaded with minerals then chances are you probably weren't that bothered until football came along and then all of a sudden a 900 year old act really mattered

Cavemen. They were the mouthy ones, dragging their wives around by their hair, chopping people up with crude weapons. We were the progressive cavemen ,inventing wheels, sparking up fires etc. We moved on, they( and their owners),haven't.
Heard gans before that marra.

Not saying the rivalry wasn't there in the 80's.. I would use Oz from AWP as an example of the explosion in "rivalry" in the past 40 years.. was perfectly happy getting pissed with MLF in the first series then outright saying "as long as youre not from, sunderland" in the Arizona series 🤣.. I love history but people are using it as an excuse to act like dicks to each other.. tbf no different to every other bunch of rivals worldwide haha

Not only had a drink with one, they went to Liege to watch Sunderland play.

But maybe they sat in the away end with black and white tops on like any number of their more plebian fellow mags have done many times since.

Posted this before..someone on here said i was talking shite but trust me it's true..we had Geordies working in our shipyards round 1987 time..Swan Hunters didn't have much work..in 1991 i went to work in the offshore yards on the Tyne..AMEC..if any lads from Sunderland started they would have a one day strike and some of them would refuse to work with Sunderland lads..fkn wankers denying a bloke the right to work because of where he's from.

When people ask me the difference between makems and jawdies, I refer to Pharaohs and slaves as an example.
We are the Pharaohs of course.

It’s about time it was stopped imo. I believe it holds the region back and makes people who are hard of thinking even more set in their ways. No matter where I go in this country the people are the same. I treat everyone the same until they seem like a lost cause. Be the better person.
Every region has rival football clubs / cities / towns
