Tommy Watson ( ...off to Brighton)

According to the internet(?) Ross Stewart who was sold for pretty much the same fee is on £20K a week. Jack Clarke sold for about £15M is on £25K.

Perhaps Tommy will be on about the same as Ross Stewart?

Both Stewart and Clarke were established championship players mate. Watson has been signed purely on potential.

Although Watson will be on more money at Brighton then he would have got here, I’d honestly be shocked if he was on north of £10k a week.

I suspect Brighton will know he isn’t PL ready and therefore they won’t want him on big wages whilst he’s in the development squad - especially as other lads who are perhaps ahead of him are on less.

As I posted earlier though, I do find it a strange move for the lad.

He will 100% be on more than 10k a week

Can only think the club was told to announce it in order to control the narrative. I believe Brighton followed our announcement. Somebody must have forced the club to do this before seasons end, probably for nefarious reasons. Agent probably said announce it coz I'm putting it on Twitter that he's off.
it was out there anyway, weeks ago. as you say, they now control the narrative

Correct re financial gain , haven't heard many posts on how he might have doubled his money.
Speakman offering what our model pays against premiership money.
What would you do if someone doubled you wage.
Can't blame him really. Money talks

They're paying £10 Million for him.
There's no way he'll be getting only £5000 per week.
Closer to the suggested £40000.

Brighton have paid £10m purely for potential mate. There will be an element of future proofing in his contract given the fee paid but clubs like Brighton simply won’t have 18 year old lads, who have barely played 20 games (of which over half he was pretty poor in), sitting on £40k a week for the next 3-4 years. It’s just not the way that well run clubs operate.

It a shame but he seems like he really wanted to leave so what do the club do? They’ve got a very good fee that may prove to be brilliant business or somewhat undervalued, who knows.

Looking back over the last 5 years when Donald was selling the ‘great’ youngsters for cheap, there’s not many if any at all that are doing anything.

First team football is more important than money at this stage of his career imo.

It’s a strange move bud. I fully appreciate he will be on more money but as you say, first team football is more important at this stage of his career - hence why Rigg and Jobe are still with us.

Fwiw, I don’t think the club are at blame. I suspect he offered a decent wage for an 18 year old kid that has just broken into the first team squad.

Their wage bill is 3m quid a week

Agree with this. It's a very simplistic view to say "he's getting paid more, he won't care". Aye, at the minute he won't, and either way it's his decision to make. But if he moves to Brighton for a good pay rise, maybe he's on £20k or whatever but never plays, has to go on loan and doesn't kick on, then it'll likely be the only good deal he gets. With hindsight he might have been better placed staying here on £10k, playing more often, becoming a key player and moving in a couple of years time for a load more than the £20k or whatever he's on now.

I suppose one trouble was that we wouldn't be guaranteeing him first team football, given Mundle is ahead of him in his development. But regardless, an early move for a bit extra isn't always the best decision over the course of a career even purely from an earnings perspective, and certainly not from a development one.

You'd assume Brighton have shown him a "pathway" and it's all in hand, but then his agent is a thick, shit, piss head so nothing would surprise me.

It definitely feels that way mate.

Obviously I don’t know what has gone on behind the scenes but even if the club were offering say £1500 a week (plus all the usual bonuses) that would still be a very good deal for a 18 year old.

I can’t see Brighton offering huge wages, so he’s quite possibly left a pretty safe environment for him to develop (a set up he knows etc) for perhaps an extra £200k a year after tax? Seems a risk imo as if he struggles, he will quickly get peddled

And as @JJH has just posted, he gets to say he is/was a premier league player.
They are offering life changing money that's the problem
