I thought it would be a big mistake for the lad, hopefully get him a new decent contract here and he plays some premier league football next year. But even if he did want to go and it didn’t work out we should all be pleased he didn’t. The last thing we should do is give the kid any shit over it….

It was his first professional contract. Apparently, a typical salary for a footballer's first professional contract ranges anywhere between 350 quid and 1500 quid a week. Obviously, it will depend on the club, e.g. top flight clubs will pay more, and how close the player is to first team football.
23/24 season, Watson was only in the squad 4 times. He signed his contract in September 2023. That 600 quid is very likely to be roughly correct, it's as much as Watson could have expected when he signed at that time and it's not out of line with a first professional contract for any footballer, unless they're at Man City or Arsenal someone.
If you have any knowledge of Watson's salary that demonstrates it's bollocks, then feel free to post it.
Yet here we are, money in the bank and a team flying in the league, that’s frankly and absolute joy to watch, and worth a fair bit too.
It’s almost as if that’s exactly how you want your club to be ran.

It's bonkers isn't it? I know this board isn't a fair representation of the clubs fanbase at large, but there are some proper doom mongers on here who constantly throw rocks at the club no matter what it does
Hence why I said a good move. Obviously if it’s a step down the player may knock if back like the Brighton player did to us. Generally speaking if it’s a decent move for yourself with more money and the club has accepted the bid it’s difficult to stay. Sure Quinn had to talk Henderson round though and tell him it was a great deal for the club and move for him. The rest is history they say!

That wouldn't be my assumption and I reckon Watson's situation is different.
Reportedly, Watson is on 600 quid a week. No reason to doubt that given he signed his professional contract in September 2023 and he was only in the squad 4 times that season. That salary would be in line with what a professional footballer signing his first contract, at a club like Sunderland, and not close to the first 11, could expect.
Watson's advisers will want a hefty pay rise at this stage. In all probability, the club will not be meeting that level of pay rise at this stage, they don't have to as the player is under contract and they'll have a way of dealing with all players that will have to be conformed to in order to keep the structure and everyone knows where they stand. When Watson becomes a first team regular, that's different. Reckon it's just a case that Watson hasn't signed because him and his advisers think he's worth more, they have 18 months to prove it so no rush to sign, and the club does not have to pander to what Watson's advisers think (at this stage, under contract for 18 months).
Seems clear to me that the club looked at this way: if we can get Brighton's lad in, then it's worth taking the risk that Watson will become a 40 million pound player at Brighton because Brighton's lad could well be the difference to get us out of this league this season (and the massive increase in revenue that comes wit that) but, if we can't get Brighton's lad then it's not a risk worth taking because Watson could be the difference in getting us out of this league.
Reckon it's a simply a case that the club's decision was based on what is the best for us to get us out of this league this season, and 12 million quid in money, presumably paid in installments, with no left-winger other than Mundle wasn't the best for us.
The club may have already set a precedent though, by upgrading Rigg, Jobe and Ballard's contracts, albeit they had more games time in the first team.
Watson has been unlucky to be behind Clarke and then Mundle, as he'd probably have broke through a year earlier at another club, less blessed on the left wing.
