Tommy Watson ( ...off to Brighton)

Transfer windows over now so should free up some time to sort out some contracts so we don't end up in a mess come summer, though I guess the uncertainty on divisions may be an issue.

Got Watson, O Nien, Cirkin, Roberts and Neil going into their last 12 months. Makes sense to tie them all down unless they want to sell any come summer.

Bennette, Moore, Anderson I don't think they'll be arsed about but be nice to get the other five tied down so we can go into the summer window focusing on what's coming in and not what might be going out.

Feels similar to when I thought Rigg wouldn’t extend, we can hopefully still tie Watson down and move on.
If anything it means we get more money and the player is a bit more happy. It does seem that clubs take their local lads for granted as if they can take the piss a bit more. I bet the new lads earn more than them which must annoy them, not just in about us either

I’m sure the 10k a week contract sitting on the table tomorrow morning could soften the blow! Get it signed and get your head down young man and help get your boyhood team to the promised land!

Spot on. He has a chance to create memories that will last him a lifetime, write his name in the history books at 19 years old.

Watson, Cirkin and Neil are the big ones there. All 3 would be a big part of our squad going forward. The others i don't think would be capable of making the step up to the premier league. O'nien will be 31 when his contract is due for renewal - could be one of those where we give him another 2 years as a squad player maybe if we haven't got promoted, but certainly no rush to tie him down. Roberts will be 29 so maybe a similar position.

We need to offer the key players good contracts now maybe with assurances that if we don't go up certain release clauses become active. We can't allow ourselves to be carrying contract problems in the business end of the season

He didn’t want to go

Sunderland told Brighton £12m and the lad on loan for the season

Tommy and Martin travelled down as told by his employer

Deal not done, Tommy is delighted to stay at Sunderland
But not delighted to sign his contract yet ... his perogative of course

It was a no lose moment for the club, which is rare for Sunderland.

If he went and we got a winger back in return with a nice little pay day, pretty good business for the now for SAFC, now that it seems it didn't work out we keep a lad with bags of talent if a little raw and untested atm, should be back in the frame in around 4 weeks iirc.

I was happy either way, its nothing like the past when we used to sell at the last minute with no replacement or plan for peanuts.

I dont blame the lad either mind if he fancied a move, you never know what's around the corner in football and you have to make good when you get the chance.

Hopefully he gets his head down, works hard and he may even earn a even better move while helping us to the next level, win win.

Mind its nice to have this problem for a change, means our youth set up is downing something right at last!

In fairness if you watch any ex pros talk about transfers. Once a bid is accepted and it’s a good move on more money you pack your bags unfortunately it’s the way it is. Story of Henderson not wanting to go all them years ago but it still happend.

Not totally convinced myself.

If we had accepted an offer from say big spending Birmingham in League One, I'd bet that Watson would have turned it down. I think due to it being Brighton, who are well established in the premier league, it wasn't such difficult decsion, and he would have moved happily, just like when Henderson went to Liverpool when we got relegated.

I don't think he'll be unhappy to come back and play for us, but I'll not be surprised if he'll be away in the summer neither.

You’d imagine if he wants Brighton that much hes just going to play hard ball over a new contract and they’ll sign him in the summer for a reduced offer

There's making outrageous demands and then there's being fair. He is reportedly on 600 quid a week. There are other squad players earning a lot more than him, e.g. Ba 4,500, (according to reports) who will not play anywhere near as much as him over the next 18 months.

On that basis, not signing an extension now isn't outrageous, depending on what he is being offered, nor does it mean he wants to leave Sunderland. He's got 18 months, no rush, it's in his interests to play more football, establish himself as a first team regular and then negotiate his contract.

You don't know 'he wants Brighton that much'. Rather than look for a problem with a young lad, and you have no idea what has happened there, best to leave it in the past. He's still here, according to SAFC and Brighton valuations of a lad who has barely played, you'd have to think he's going to be a very good player for us.

600 quid a week 😳😳😳

If that’s true then aye it’s a complete Pisstake.

Reckon it will have to do with his age, he signed his contract in 2023. Probably a starter salary for all of the young lads who sign their first contract.

If he can establish himself as a first team regular then he is in a much better position to negotiate a vastly improved contract. That's what I'd do, wouldn't rush into signing one now.
