Tommy Watson ( ...off to Brighton)

based on the suggested fee and minutes this season we are basically getting £2 million for every 90 minutes senior football he played. Not a bad return that
For the owners, we the fans are not getting that. I hate how people get excited over the money the owners are making.

These owners have shown that they don't put even half of the fee back into the team! If we get 12 millions for him, we'll be lucky if they spent 2 million on a replacement. The rest will go on running the club, like upkeep/maintenance, taxes, wages, marketing, foghorns... and some will be pocketed by the owners as profit.

You've no idea what they put in.

Life is a gamble though, the only constant is change. What can you do about it. Nothing really just try to better yourself. I don’t think embleton was going to be that good however. Wasn’t really bothered when he moved on. This new crop however are different I think.

Only time will tell. You don’t know what is a good price for this lad.
I know what's a good price for a second choice injured winger with 18 months left and a handful of first team games...it's this.

Interesting, I'm sure it'll go down a treat on here.
It's difficult to imagine for most on here, but the truth of the matter will most likely be a mixture of several scenarios, at less extremes than posted. He may have wanted to stay ... on a comparable contract to that being offered by Brighton. That wouldn't happen, so he'll take the money being guaranteed etc.

It's just football commerce, it'll happen again, and if we get back up we'll likely be in the Brighton role in future.

The club do use income from all sources to cover expenditure, nothing surprising in that. As to ‘some will be pocketed by the owners as profit’ - the club is not making a profit, a quick glance at the published accounts tells you that the owners have been subsidising losses.

Yup. The two previous big (ish) money departures from us were LND (fee said to be up to £10m) and Jack (up to £20m).

Not withstanding injuries to RS, neither are first-choice at their respective clubs.

Speakman and co (so far) look like they've had both the Saints' and eyes out.

Maybe that will change for Watson, and Albion will end up selling him for £120m to Barcelona in two years. But given the above then for me, for now, I'm trusting 'the process'.
If there’s any chance of that happening I would like to think there would be clauses included in the contract.

Oh do shut up.

Brighton coming back again after a failed bid in the summer doesn't exactly say he's happy here?
Exactly, if he was happy he would have signed a new deal…Brighton coming back for him suggest some encouragement on his part imo.

It is what it is, I’d be happy if he stayed as has bags of potential but also happy if we get the right deal for him.

interesting that it appears you gauge players quality based on what the club pays for them. Didier Ndong must have been the best footballer you've ever seen play for us! and Defoe was terrible since he only cost us 1 Altidore!

Said it a few days ago in this thread but
am I the only one who doesn't see the massive doom on this one?

There's only 3 years between him and Mundle and personally, as things stand, I don't see him starting games ahead of Mundle if/when both are fit.

I think Mundle's injury has made us forget just how good he has been, with 7 goals contributions in 15 games and lets be honest, he'd been playing so well that we'd even forgotten we had sold our best player last season in Jack Clarke!

I'm sure Watson will go on to have a good career and he looks an excellent talent, but if we can get a decent fee for a player who has 18 months left on his deal and is likely to be second choice in his own position behind a player who is only 3 years older than him (so alleviating any continuity issues in which we're looking for a replacement in the short term), I don't see a massive issue.

We'd all like to have 2 or 3 players fighting it out for each position but the reality is that, at this level especially, it is not always realistic.

Reported fees of £12m+ for what very possibly could be a player who is second choice in his own position at the club and who is not going to sign a new deal here, thus going for free or a minimal fee in the next 12-18 months, seems okay to me.

If I owned a business, I wouldn't mind making a bit profit.
I think this is the way things work. 🙄.

Completely agree.

PL Clubs like Brighton, (Palace, Bournemouth, Brentford) càn afford to buy our young players and pay them much more than we can. We just need to accept that.
If the offer for Watson is accepted and he wants to go then that's how it is.
The emotional pull of SAFC is with the supporters not the players or the coaching staff, the recruitment team or the ownership. I think most of us understand and accept this.
We might not like it, but the money at the top end of the game is the deciding factor in these type of situations. If we do return to the PL and manage to stay there for a while we will be doing the same thing to other clubs and selling our players to the "bigger" PL clubs and those from abroad.
