Tommy Watson ( ...off to Brighton)


Would be gutted if Watson goes. He was excellent in that first half against Sheffield Utd away. However, by way of consolation, one of my staff members knows/lives near the Watson family and she said his younger brother, who is apparently in our academy, is even better.

They tend not to though- with transfer rumours there is often a back scratching exercise- if it isn't on the cards then Brighton might consider it useful for certain people to think they are bringing in a new winger (because they have their own contract/transfer negotiations, where the idea of competition is helpful)-
I partly think that if this transfer was on the cards, it wouldn't be all over the media.
Jack Clarke to Ipswich, and Stewart to Southampton seemed to happen very fast- and we are often blindsided by incoming players.
We tend to keep our cards close to our chest and never deny rumours afaik.

Maybe Brighton conduct themselves differently, but I do think it's a bit strange.

At this point in time, we can't put Tommy on the team sheet and might not be able to until March, or maybe even April - who can tell with our (in)ability to assess or treat an injury.

I don't want him to go, but Clarke had way more (and justified) hype around him at Leeds and he ended up in league one with us to get his career back on track.

They are taking a punt on him, if they do buy him there isn't that much to suggest he's going to be a big star.

I also still think this is just an agent playing silly buggers to get a new contract. I just can't imagine what Brighton think they are buying. Sunderland's 3rd best youth prospect?


I don't really believe that this sale will happen. But I do understand why the club would find it hard to resist that sort of money. I do worry that Watson might regret it in a years time if he gets shunted out on loan.

I don't think it's fair to write teams off because they don't have a massively successful history.

Ours has been shite for over 50 years and most of our lives and we basically live off glory from pre war.

This is the way of modern football marra.
95% of lads who sign pro contracts at 16 aren’t playing any form of organised football by the time they’re 25 according to the last FA survey reports. I’m sure those lads would be the first to tell young Tommy to get it while the gettings good.
Can’t blame him or Jack Clark or DannyRose or the other kids who’ve headed to the big clubs at the first wave of a £1m pound lifestyle.

I can’t see why he won’t hold out until the end of the season, could be in with promotion and playing games that get us there rather than going somewhere for reserve team football. We’re only talking a few months difference.

Exactly. And let's be honest, Clarke lost about a year of his career due to it. Maybe two.
If he'd stayed at Leeds he would have likely got to the PL quicker. We know he has the ability (Ipswich was never a good fit imo)

I suppose what I was saying was that it's not like some fairytale where they've created some magic formula - it's took a gargantuan amount of coin to get them up there - but aye, again that further highlights your point about the way we were being run, we could have been like Brighton in reverse, spent half a billion and ended up fuck knows where and without a ground.

Aaron Lennon is another, frightened us shitless one Boxing Day when he played for Leeds, then Spurs came calling.

Thing is, wingers like him, and Watson, rely on pace, I think what even I hadn’t considered was how they have a shorter lifespan at top level unless they can adapt.
