Tommy Watson ( ...off to Brighton)

I genuinely don’t think I’d take 20m for the lad. I think his ceiling is much higher.

It also means we have to scramble around in the final day of the window trying to get another LW when we already need a RW.

One who can come in and learn the system we play and build those relationship's, we are at the business end of the season and simply cannot be f***ing around chopping and changing. We need to go for automatics.
We have zero chance of seeing his ceiling when he only has 18 months left to go. £20m would be a good price, I hope it goes that high but I doubt it.

I can’t believe we are talking about 20miion for a lad that has played no more than 10 games

Aye, I'm pretty confident that at 18 years old I'd think I was better off with my family, mates, the area and a club that gives young players a game for a couple of years and then have a think about it. As it stands, he's not going to play in the top flight so what's he going to do.

To be fair to him, if his reported salary and the salaries of other players are correct, then I too would be looking for a pay rise. Not greedy though. Fair for a lad who has broke into the first team and looks like he has a promising future, but yet still 18 and only played a handful of matches. A balance somewhere.

That's how I see it!

We have to be fair with him aswell, the contract offer has to be a good one. If we took the piss with a shit extension then I'd get him wanting to leave but as it stands I genuinely think this is one of the best places for him.

His ceiling is higher but with 18 months left on his contract we won't get that for him.
We can only sell him if we have a replacement in but if the rumours are true (Clarke on loan) then I'd be more than happy accepting the £10M+ for him.

Has there been any actual rumour about Clarke or has this forum just been trying to manifest one?

I’d happily turn it down if the team I supported were probably in a position to treble my wage soon enough and were quite likely already offering me a massive jump in wage anyway and a clear opportunity for first team football
It’s a short career, anything can happen, injury, loss of form, flash in the pan, take what you can when you can. Once your future is financially secure you can start making sentimental decisions.

Northern echo hinting it’ll take 20m to get him out of Sunderland.

That’s decent money given his ceiling and appearances to date. However, As we know, £20m sitting in a bank account is a lot less effective than having a talented player on the pitch as we chase promotion.

Very, very few players are going to turn down a premier league club move regardless of whether they support the lads or not.

It’s a job let’s not forget that.

If someone offered you three times your current salary and a chance to further your career how many, hand on heart could say they’d turn it down ?

I’ve no idea whether Watson will leave or not.

I’d love him to stay but if he goes good luck to him and let’s see who we bring in.
It depends playing time means everything at his point, if he’s been assured of playing time there then fair enough that’s highly doubtful though. Hand on heart if I were a Sunderland fan just broke through to the first team and had confidence in myself I’d see out there’s season hoping I’d helped my team to promotion then I’d get my bumper pay jump having helped my team. If we failed I’d then ask the club to allow me to leave having agreed to stay till the summer and help with promotion push. I’d just don’t see just like Clarke how this move benefits him bar a quick pay bump six months earlier than he’d get one anyway. This move makes even less sense than Clarke given he’s just broke through is local lad and is almost guaranteed playing time here when he’s fit. Surely that’s the main aim at 18 to get playing time, look at rigg the lad could’ve easily moved in the summer to way bigger clubs than Brighton but knew he’d get way more chance of playing staying here for another year. His profile has went up massively since the summer and should he move in the summer he’s done his development a world of good having a full season in men’s second tier footy.

Totally agree. Depends. If and it’s a big if he’s told Sunderland he wants away and won’t sign a new deal there’s a decision to be made

Why not?. Premier league money £20m is absolutely nowt add in the fact he’s English 18 and highly rated that’s a steal. If he proves to be half as good as we all hope £20m is nowt.

I wouldn’t imagine so.

10k a weekish, 6k after tax, 24k a month, 288k a year for 5 year let’s just say. Very good money but it’s not going to ensure you never have to work again after playing.

Change that to 30k, 18k after tax, 54k a month, 648k a year for 5 year. Plus a hefty signing on fee.

That’s a huge difference.
Fallacy. Untried kid like him nowhere near the first team for them will not be 30k week. Less than half that. He’ll get a raise from here but it won’t be that significant.
