Tommy Conway - Mutants

Looks a good striker that will add to Boro's already decent options.

I see a few trying to dumb down this signing, but its clear that Boro are a club that are showing ambition, and it may well pay off for them this season.

If we'd signed a striker who'd scored 20 goals in 80 games and was in the last year of his contract for £4.5M I'd be shocked.

Obviously I'd give him a chance but I'd be slightly worried about his scoring percentage and definitely thinking Bristol had our eyes out.

Probably, but strikers (as we know) are expensive and he's young and British. Literally one good season and he'd be sold for massive profit.

Also, my comment wasn't necessarily about the player, rather the ambition of the owner. As I said, Gibson has made loads of mistakes and I don't really rate the way the go about signing players. But I do like how he does back the club.

As I said the ideal is that ambition coupled with a better scouting/ data led strategy imo.

Why? Boro have a very ambitious owner.
Surely all owners are ambitious. Boro have been in the Prem one season in the last 15 years so where has it all gone wrong?

Ps. I like Gibson and have always found him to be a good owner

Our model is so constrictive it seems like we can never compete in the "open market" for a player that is clearly talented and may well increase in value e.g. this Conway lad. We hold back salary increases until we like the look of a player e.g. Ballard Neil Patterson Rigg maybe Roberts and presumably the offer to Clarke. We keep rolling the dice on players who have shown raw potential, have few other options and therefore are affordable. TBF to Speakman we've had a bit of success but unearthing a 15 goal striker in this method is gonna take a while.

Poor managerial appointments. Southgate after McLaren went to England, Strachan after that, giving millions to Gary Monk. Pulis after that. Then Woodgate. Wilder was a prick.

Mowbray and Warnock were ok and had to clean up the mess from previous appointments. If Gibson had appointed better we would undoubtedly spent more time in PL.

Now we have gone down the route of Kieran Scott as DoF and Carrick. It's the best feeling round the club in around 15 years. Of course it could all go to shit but I think Gibson passing control to Kieran Scott is looking promising. Latte Lath, Rogers, Van Den Berg have been brilliant buys for relative peanuts. Initial signs are we could be onto a winner.

Delighted we don't follow the Boro 'model'.

They have spent 1 season in the Premier League in the last 15 years. Aspirational stuff.
🤭🤭
And NONE in the third tier.
Oh yes, the season BEFORE our (and your) last season in the premier league was the last time you finished in a higher position than us.

Aspirational stuff indeed

Second bottom in your first year back after 7 in the Championship. Something to be proud of.

We have been shit in recent years, it can't be denied. But no one should be aspiring to be Boro.

Immensely arrogant, He's been training with the U21s, not just because he wouldn't sign a new contract, but they way he went about it. Pissed off the powers that be at City enormously. I don't think that type of personality would fit with us.

Bristol City just signed Scott Twine for about £3mn I think. Good player at this level and still a few quid left over from the Conway deal.

More selective stats from the boro lot 🤣

The clubs don't even compare man 🤣
