Tom Burwell

He has a role which he appears to have experience in, but he has no personal connection with the area and fans. His job is to increase the income of the club as much as possible to compete with, as much as possible, the big clubs, and he doesn’t seem to care how we get there.
The fans love the club, have a huge personal connection with it and see that as something to be proud of rather than just wanting it to be an impersonal club.

Shades of Bain. I watched his podcast interview thing the other day. He’s going to have a hard job getting the balance right between maximising revenue and keeping the fans onside

He's made a great first impression by selling off a box used to allow terminally ill children to watch Sunderland games to the highest bidder, without even giving them the opportunity to purchase it.

As far as introductions go, that will be hard to top.

He reeks of l’odeur LinkdIn
Having said that I dare say every premier club has someone at that level cut from exactly the same cloth
It’s all about the money wrapped in corporate cliches about customer satisfaction, engagement and other pithy platitudes

The best way to do that and take everyone on the journey is the redevelopment of a stand. They can keep concessionary rates that are absolutely necessary to meet socioeconomic needs of the fan base whilst chasing the coin that is needed to compete. That is going to require a cash injection from the owners however and his reference to costs on that front was slightly concerning.

In the immediacy it seems that the silver is being pursued at the expense of the ordinary match goer. If results turn, that becomes disastrous for club trust and not particularly helpful for the coffers either

the reference to the costs is simple market conditions
My impression is that the work will happen when the market allows it to be an investment that makes sense financially.
its makes sense right now on a practical basis clearly for them.

And the idea that they are kicking a charity out of a box, is a bit of a strange read.
They've donated that box on a season by season basis.
We should be applauding the fact that they have been doing it, and will continue to support the charity in other ways.

At the end of the day, the success of Sunderland AFC should be the primary objective of the clubs leadership.
For us to progress there are going to be bumps in the road where not everyone is aligned.
That's life.
Every family has disagreements.

I think that’s too much of an easy cop out for the club on some basic missteps. They were heavy handed with the St James ticket stuff, have been heavy handed in response to people wanting to change season tickets from corporate to non-corporate due to affordability and are not quite seeing obvious optics pitfalls with this. The removal of Bruce, someone who I think had a bit of a good eye for this stuff, to go for a more connected person for the job another indicator.

Nevertheless, all I’m saying is that they need to be very careful treading the revenue is king path. It’s important, but taking everyone with you is vital.

To tell everyone (repeatedly) that we are a fans-first organisation & then take an no. of actions which go against that same mantra is disingenuous.

It’s also a quick way to lose credibility with a fanbase 4 weeks into the job.

I liked his podcast but it now reeks of bullshit.
