Probably. But people always assume the latest thing is better

The Aussie's best side was better than the Windies etc

nee chance

Tom Graveney was on the telly last night saying that he thinks that the current England side is the best since the team of 1953, although he did say that this was very subjective, as playing conditions, laws, external pressures, travel etc. are completely different.

Batting is possibly better. Bowling better then, IMHO. Anderson couldn't get in the 2005 squad. This Indian team is nowhere near as strong as that Aussie one was.

I disagree. Cook, Morgan and Trott, are much and muchness for Trescothick, Colly and Vaughan.

Prior and Swann are probably better than G Jones and Giles.

But is Broad better than Flintoff? Tremlett better than Harmiison? Bresnan better than Hoggard? Anderson better than S Jones?

Anderson then isnt Anderson now who is just about the best in the world at what he does. I guess it would be a straight choice between Anderson now and Hoggard then and thats a really tough call. Both have almost identical test records and Hoggard was at his peak then as is Anderson now.

Anderson for me as he has a much better variety of balls and is a little bit sharper.

my 11 would be the following

1Trescothick
2Cook
3Trott
4Vaughan (capt)
5Pietersen - 2005 version
6Bell - 2011 Version
7Prior
8Flintoff
9Broad
10Swann
11Anderson

12th Man - S Jones

so overall IMO 2011 team is better

It is difficult as everyone seemed to peak in 2005 but looking aside from the ashes series there were a good few average players in that team.

I was nodding in agreement with your selection until I suddenly realised you had missed out Harmison. I would have to include him but can't decide who to drop. Probably either Anderson or Broad if I was going to keep the same structure or Bell if the team needed to win a test to clinch the series.

Flintoff
Prior

Harmison
Anderson

Harmison was an awkward customer and had everything in his armour to be top drawer but he underachieved as a test cricketer for his talent.

In the 2005 series he took 17 wickets at 33 which was more or less his average throughout his test career (31.85) Dont get me wrong he had a good career but not as good as it should have been and he was disastrous in Australia and SA.

people are forgetting that the 2005 side peaked for the ashes. the likes of harmison were very average apart from an 18 month spell and vaughan, as good a captain as he was, was very much on the slide with the bat. the 2011 attack is certainly better, although obviously flintoff would get in there.

Anderson for me. more variation and a world ahead of hoggy in the field.
