I think I'd go with 4 Seamers as well and I think I'd give Stokes another crack with a promissing display with the ball in the first innings. Stats can be misleading but they definitely show that the Aussies are cashing in on our spinner/spinners this series. I'd bring a Seamer and Batsman in for the 2 spinners and get Root to Bowl a few overs.

The plastic mag wankathon ground to a halt then......

The very fact people were touting him as the best spinner in the world not long ago tells you all about the standard of test match bowling attacks.

I'd go;

Cook*
Carberry
Root
KP
Bell
Bairstow+
Stokes
Broad
Bresnan
Anderson
Panesar (barely mind... The bloke is mediocre at best)

Amazing how you can go from a strong looking test team to a pretty average looking one so quickly.

Cant see this being anything less than 5-0 no matter who plays.

Bresnan or Finn in for Panesar would be my only change to the side. Stokes impressed me to be honest and although he may not be completely ready as a test number 6, he has made his debut, and another game in different conditions will help his development massively. Would also be very harsh on Ballance throwing him in on the fastest deck in the world against Johnson who is currently bowling at the speed of light!

Bresnan for Monty would be my only change. That said I would be trying to up the speed of all our quicks. Broad and Anderson need to be back bowling late 80's / 90 regularly. We need to use Bresnan and Anderson for control and Broad as our quick, tall strike bowler.

How would you do that? Steroids? Or just red bull?

Both Broad and Anderson used to regularly bowl 5 mph quicker than they do now. They need to give up a little control to get there speed back up. Anderson has 5 wickets in 4 innings and he's going for 3 runs an over  If any of the tall lads were in form he would be in danger of being dropped.

Every single one of our bowlers seems to be 5-10 mph slower than they were. I'm not sure if this is tiredness from playing more first class matches than any other test nation, or a conscious decision to slow down to extract swing on home wickets. We are really missing a Harmison or Flintoff to take the bowling to the opposition.

Really? That's not what I remember.

Anderson has been 85mph and moving it both ways since he came back into the side in 2006. Before that, when he was trying to bowl quicker, he was carted all over the world. Broad is a couple of clicks quicker but has never been a consistent 90mph merchant.

They were both bowling mid-high 80s in Brisbane and mid 80s on the slower pitch at Adelaide.

Tell me when they both bowled consistently at 90+.

I've never said they did. I said we need them to be bowling, 'late 80's / 90' regularly which isn't regularly 90 MPH+.

They both bowled around 90 MPH before and from what I've seen they've both been bowling low to mid 80's. IMO that is 5 MPH lower than what they're capable of and what we need to give the Aussies something to think about at least.

Finn was encouraged to change his action or bowl fuller as Middx felt his short deliveries were too easy to put away on slow pitches. Perhaps we should have just shipped him off to aus for a couple of years

I can't ever remember them bowling consistently faster than they are at the minute, their pace isn't down on anything they've done since they were raw kids.

Anderson is all about rhythm and has hardly bowled a ball at 90 mph for years (if any), Broad can do it but usually sits at around the mid to late 80's, as he has done for the last 2/3 years and has done on this tour so far. I just don't see what asking those two to break their backs trying to eek out a couple of extra MPH (and almost certainly sacrifice some accuracy in the process) is going to achieve.

Wickets? Making the Aussie batsmen hurry their shots?

Hopefully hostility, intimidation, hurried shots and wickets. What Anderson has done in 4 innings thus far hasn't worked at all.

Tremlett, Finn and Rankin are there for hostility. The fact they are offering none, and bowling in the mid 80's is serious cause for concern.
