I have no rancour for those who renounce the privilage of title , the more the merrier .
In terms of tax evasion are you referring to the family ensuring his late wife's share of the joint estate passed directly to her children on her death ? Hardly tax evasion, every astute family in the land tax plans in this way don't they . At least until such times as we can achieve surity of equitable social distribution by the state.
Would he have renounced his title if he could have retained it and been an mp? We'll never know. If he hadn't renounced it he would have had to go out and get a job outside of the Westminster bubble, I do know that. That may have been strange for the son of a career mp, especially when both of his grandparents had been career mps as well.
As for the (questionable ahem) inheritance tax issue..... well if you think tax evasion/avoidance is ok if every other astute family is doing it. well, fair enough. Personally I think it stinks

Right, so a single line from a speech in 2013 without any context, edited by the Sun. Must try harder.

You can put whatever spin you wish on it but it does "stack up" when linked to his other utterances/behaviour and (as I said) it was widely reported as a quick Google will reveal.

I don't often use the simple " bullshit" retort marra and you're usually pretty canny. But all that is a pile of loaded spurious supposition so it's warrented
You would do exactly as he did . Your wife dies , you can leave your kids with huge IHT that means at a time of grief dispersing family estate or you let them have money or interest in the property there and then. Some boy you , there should be more like you, you're beyond generous .

I may well do, although I can't see myself being in that sort of financial position any time soon.
I just think it a wee bit hypocritical of him considering his left wing stance on tax during his political career
P.s. and no offence taken btw

Me neither , but this is always the problem , socialists are supposed to live their ideals before the circumstances exist to make that worthwhile , in doing so Tony would have reduced the independance his children had to fight for ideals. Independance that many of the other side often take for granted or miraculousley find funds appearing for.
I am glad you took no offence , I never thought you would to be fair. You're on the wrong forum if you do :lol:

@Brian Griffin without the unions there would be no time off on weekends, no sick pay and worst of all, people would be getting shafted over a desk by their boss every day (more so than what still happens) because they wouldn't have any rights/any options to point out their mistreatment. A lot of the benefits of work were brought around from trade union discussions.

Only a dick head would want to do away with them. Probably one that thinks all Unions do is strike. That's a last resort that isn't taken very often, regardless of what the Tory media would want you to think.

I like the way you did that by the way....
Tony Benn only evaded his taxes to give his kids more money to allow them to fight for socialism.

You're confusing socialism with a vow of poverty . In a socialist 'world' I have no doubt we would all turn everything over to the state as per our ideals , in a capitalist one it is foolish to be needlessly personally reduced when what we give is redistributed to hedge funds and they grow stronger while we grow week. While money remains the weapon don't disarm.

Online and postal voting is the way to go,it worked a treat in Tower hamlets, vote early, vote often.

Apologies you're right. I'll rephrase.

Show me the bit in that sentence where he says he wants to cut the armed forces again?

He, quite clearly, doesn't believe that we need the ability to fight beyond our own shores which (quite logically [I think] suggests ) he wishes to reduce their size quite dramatically when he said:

“Why do have to be able to have planes, transport aircraft, aircraft carriers and everything else to get anywhere in the world? Why?”

He is a "conchie" who appears to believe that a few peace beads and a Home Guard would be enough to deter any potential aggressor and wishes to decrease our international influence until it's on a par with Zimbabwe!

So he didn't actually say it then. Okay, thanks.
