First performed at the Tyne Opera House in Westgate Road, Newcastle. Not trying to kill the vibe but at the time there was less Tyne/Wear tribalism. We wanna claim a Co Durham legend? Fine, let’s do it. I just always point out that this particular song isn’t particularly ”Mackem”
Cracking tifo tho but. We have the best tifos in English football

Christ, they already claimed a song about horse races in Co. Durham, let us have something

The club of County Durham. Anyone from County Durham supporting the mags are lower than low. Pariahs.
I enjoy telling Mag colleagues and friends this, if they’ve been born in County Durham. They accuse me of hypocrisy cos I was born in North Tyneside and support the lads. I then remind them that my dad is from Washington, and anyone with close family from Washington who doesn’t support Sunderland is an even bigger wrongun than a County Durham Mag. Those audacious enough to live there are all essentially hostile settlers in Sunderland FC’s beautiful homeland.

I’d also like to point out that “worm” doesn’t mean worm. It means dragon. There are plenty of uses of it in Middle English to mean “dragon” eg in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight where the hero goes on a quest to the wilderness that is the Wirral (really) and, we’re told, “warred with worms and wolves”.
