Must have missed this one first time around but I didnt know that Cricket is the only sport that The Taliban approve of. Someone told me about this at Lord's the other day so I thought I'd look it up.

Such is the unifying power of cricket in Afghanistan that even the Taliban sent a message of support to the team ahead of their historic ODI against Pakistan in Sharjah on Friday. The match, which Pakistan won by seven wickets, was Afghanistan's first ODI against a Test-playing nation and the first ODI played between an Affiliate Member of the ICC and a Full Member.

A spokesman for the Taliban contacted the Afghanistan Cricket Board on the morning of the game to wish the team well and assure them they would be remembered in their prayers. :shock:

He plays the only sport approved by the Taliban, and Mohammad Nabi Eisakhil hopes the game he learned as a war refugee will play a big part in uniting his country.

CRICKET grounds are among the safest places in war-torn Afghanistan, the media manager for the country's under-19 team said yesterday.

"The Taliban love cricket," said the Australian, who asked not to be identified for safety reasons.

He said more than 100,000 played the game in Afghanistan.

And that, surprisingly, included girls' teams playing other girls at interschool level.

interestingly Fawad Ahmed claimed political asylum in Oz recently due to being persecuted in pakistan (the afghan border region) for playing cricket....
