Striker
England need to win against India by two clear tests and they will go to number one in the world

Jimmy is in peak form in his prime against the best batting line up around

Jimmy this is your time to deliver and take us to number one in the world

He will need to with Broad lobbing throw downs at the other end.

gotta lead the attack

its ok boosting your avg against the Windies in the rain and wind of CLS in May but this is where you earn your corn

Come on Jimmy lad. With 5 tests in the sub continent during the winter, this is our time

20 wickets ;)

EB - serious question.

With a tough winter coming up, what would you class as a success for Jimmy?

I want a number of wickets, and an average.

its difficult to say.

If we get good weather, Jimmy will struggle, if it pisses down like it did for the SL series, Jimmy will do well as others in the press have alluded to

Abroad, again its difficult to say, as you never know what Pakistan are going to do and if there aiming to win, lose or draw a particular test.

Surely set for Broad to rise from the ashes like a phoenix?

Hope this is the series that makes him.

Looking forward to it, should separate the men from the boys.

Factor in all of those variables and come up with an answer, it's not that hard.

I would say 21 against India at 33.

thats not particular good for the 'leader of the attack'

put it another way, if the rest of the side had identical figures, India would be 363 for 10 in the first and second innings of every test or 726 batting only once.

If you do the maths, we wont win many tests if any.

Your strike bowlers needs to be averaging in the 20s

What do you think his figures will be.

Swann will probably be the one who gets his wickets cheaper.

India have very good batsmen and I expect them to dominate in periods. A cheap five wicket haul will be the difference.

You can't average out one stat over another one. He might get 5 for 20 in one match and win the game, then 1 for 100 in a draw on a flat wicket.

this is the whole point we cant afford the leader of our attack in a 4 man attack to have a day where he takes 1-100. We had that in South Africa in the last test which meant the series went from us winning to only drawing.

To be the best you have to beat the best

What if he wins two of the test on his own though? He has to win every test for the side?

Other players have to step up, 'leader' or not.

McGrath was the "leader" of the Australian attack but didn't always get the most wickets.

Steyn is the "leader" of the SA attack but doesn't always get the most wickets.

Having a good, core group of bowlers who offer different aspects of the game. For once, England have this and it's why we could end the summer on the top of the World Rankings.

Exactly, but don't let that get in the way of another opportunity for someone to have a dig at Anderson.

I am not having a dig, I have simply said 33 is too high for him to average

In a four man attack, you cant really afford for your strike bowler to have two bad tests if you want to win the series by two tests

There is more responsibility on Jimmy as the leader of the attack

We need him to be consistently good all series

In fairness you went through all of this prior to Australia in the winter. he was fantastic and you moved the goalposts. If Jimmy delivers again, as he has usually does then you will do exactly the same.

Its your DNA

Of course we can Anderson has done it, Broad has done it, Warne and McGrath have done it, Holding, Garner, Roberts and Croft have all done it. There mighty be an exception somewhere in the history of test cricket for regular players but not many.

Fully agree with this.

In Essex Boy's case it stands for Don't be Nice to Anderson.

This is an almost childlike way of looking at Test cricket.

Bless you.

This has happend to every single bowler in the history of cricket.

Every single solitary one, without exception.

Your arguments and wind-ups are becoming like a five year olds, is this really all you've got left in the locker?

Is it because we're in serious danger of becoming number one in the World with Jimmy as leader of the attack, so you're already moving the discussion onto the winter?

Of course it is - a bowler can average even as high as Broad in a series but if hes knocked over key players before they get match defining innings then they can have had a good match. They can average under 30 in a game by knocking over the tail when the oposition have 500+ on and not really have done the business.
