I really like The Kinks when they're at their best, but something turns me off about them when compared to the Stones or The Beatles.
I think they were more a singles band. I'm not sure they ever made an album you could hold up against a Let It Bleed or a Sgt Peppers. Even Village Green, Lola, and Something Else. They're just not as strong. It probably didn't help that Ray disappeared up his own arse.
It may be something in the delivery too. Ray's voice doesn't travel as well. And the drum kit's often very loud in the mix, over a clapped-out jangly guitar. It often works, but there's something about The Kinks sound that can be quite jarring. Don't get me wrong, Waterloo Sunset is sheer pop perfection and one of the best things ever recorded. But I could listen to the Stones / The Beatles all day. Once I've listened to 20 of the best Kinks songs I've just about had enough.
