The most ordinary bowling in years.

That has to have been the most ordinary bowling performance by an England team since before the Fletcher / Hussein era changed some old English thinking and started to value pace and hostility over the steady guy.

No one really ran in today, and they all looked a bit sorry for themselves. Well I hope they are ready for some more tomorrow, because they will be bowling until at least tea time. You can't bowl a team like SA out with wibbly wobbly medium pace shite, and that is all England offered today.

TBH, i dont blame them having to bowl on that f***ing dust pit, terrible wicket

Think its unfair to suggest that it was down to poor bowling. The South Africans deserve credit for making it look very easy Amla, Smith and Kallis are World Class batsmen and it makes a change playing a team that don't throw their wickets away every so often ;-)

I'm yet to be convinced Bresnan is the answer to our 3rd seamer question.

He's only in the team ahead of Finn because he can bat a bit as well, IMO. Hardly seems like much of a contest when you've got one man who's 6ft6 and can bowl 90mph accurately and hostilely compared to a medium fast bowler who doesn't really excel at anything.

We have to give the South Africans huge credit IMHO.

Sometimes you just come up against a better team.

Bit harsh on the only bowler to take a wicket today.

Aye, it was a rip-snorter of a delivery ;-)

It was disappointing but I don't think the effort can be faulted and they seemed to keep in high spirits throughout. Pitch offered nothing and South Africans batted really well. Only critcism you can make of England is that they gave their wickets away cheaply yesterday

Still of the belief and have been for few years that the saffers are the best around would also there is now a huge gulf between the top 2 and the rest that when you come up against this calibre you are undercooked

I was thinking the same yesterday. He's got a good record, but is nothing much more than a bits a pieces player and the number 1 ranked team in the world can't afford to pick their first change seamer on the strength of his batting.

Bresnan is a functional cricketer. His inclusion was on the back of a win in each Test he played in making him difficult to drop. However, he has held Broad back, who is a Test number 8 with the potential to bat 7. The in form Finn is the better bowler and has 10 - 15 wickets in him for the next 2 Tests.

The only difference between the sides is the middle orders in my opinion. Amla, Kallis and De Villiers cash in on a more consistent and bigger basis than Trott, Pietersen and Bell. Trott and Pietersen got into terrific positions to cash in on a good start but they didnt.

You must have been asleep in 2009 when Australia scored nearly 700?

Nasser has just explained exactly why the bowling has looked ordinary. No movement and no help in the pitch on any day apart from Friday. On the other two days, only 4 wickets fell so neither attack could get the ball to do anything.

Although they havent won here,, i think they have a better team on paper than england

Just commented on another post saying just that. It's a nothing wicket and Surrey's groundstaff need to answer questions. Not a good advert for test cricket.

I doubt very much that anyone would have complained about the pitch or advertisement of test cricket had England racked up 700 for 2 after bowling South Africa out for less than 400

I think they would, any game where there are only 12 wickets taken in the first 4 days is on a wicket not fit for test cricket.

(Just become aware of the time, hopefully it's 12 in 4 days)

13 wickets in the first 4 days is a joke of a wicket.

I think the vast majority would be praising Englands performace frist and foremost and the odd person might have mentioned the pitch being too flat. South Africa are in a commanding position and I think they will win and then the pitch being flat doesnt come into it.
