The Morning After The Night Before

I’m sure the people running the club are looking on and making decisions around strengths/weaknesses, whether they be coaching or playing staff and will address them in the summer. Last night wasn’t good enough and there’s never nothing to play for when European football was a possibility and each position higher in the league is worth around £3m.

After the first goal it was like watching a team with literally no idea what to do , uncoached and all at sea. Don’t want to view the team through the lense of last night but it did actually happen 🤷‍♂️

Playing Hume left back immediately meant Hutchinson had him on toast. There's rightly a lot of talk of how bad we were, but bothe their wingers were excellent.
Agreed. We are trying to play a bit more expensive and didn't have any out ball on the left. Just really poor planning. Still can't believe it tbh.

Wasn't really arsed last night as it was inevitable after the first goal. Villa annoyed me much more.

Certainly gives the club stuff to think about next season across the board. Recruitment, style, planning etc. Firmly believe the club want us to playing a better style to sell players for huge money easier.

They did their homework and knew exactly what we were going to do. Regis or Xhaka should have told them early on to just get it up to Brobbey and scrap for the second balls until we could get to half time and sort it properly.

Whilst last night was awful. Social media seems to be full of mag trolls but they seem under aware that the mags have a history of conceding 5 or more goals and I don't just mean Barca.

Not buying the tiredness really mind, we've played 3 games in about 6 weeks.

We were just all over the place and too open. We were complacent.
I posted last night, our fitness levels look miles behind the oppositions at times. Last night was very evident. We couldn't get anywhere near the 2nd balls. Too many players look fucked every game early doors. Mukiele especially, you can tell he only trains once a week.

Pleased to be out of the race for Europe?

I'm gutted personally, the end of the season was all lined up to be a corker with games against teams around us to decide who qualifies. I had every faith in our recruitment to strengthen so we could cope with the extra games.

But in typical Sunderland fashion we have probably blown a massive opportunity. How anyone can be happy with that is beyond me.

Last night was bleak, although it was how I thought the entire season would have gone in the weeks following Wembley. As it was a one off and it's May next week I'm actually not overly bothered.

Selfishly I can't afford European football anyway. ;)

It's been an amazing season really, although different to the recent football league seasons as we're not really chasing anything. Hopefully we can get some decent results from the last 4.

HTL, KTF etc.
Forests next european game is villa, you could afford that! 😉

Said to my mate we were in trouble as their 2 up top destroyed us with their press and we flapped.
Keeper to midfield and early pass to Alderete constantly, is easy for anyone to work against, never mind a prem manager/team .
We gave the ball away like this , well before they scored .
Tactically outdone... fair play to them

They did their homework and knew exactly what we were going to do. Regis or Xhaka should have told them early on to just get it up to Brobbey and scrap for the second balls until we could get to half time and sort it properly.
They were crowding Brobbey out, and subsequently any of the runners he could lay it off to. They got their tactics spot on and we didn’t deal with it as the game went on.

I couldn’t believe how long it took RLB to change things up. They scored their first 4 goals over a 20 minute spell. It’s not exactly a smash and grab.

I could write off the first half as a freak 30 minutes, but losing the second half puts things in a different light.

I know the result doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things, and agree that Europe would’ve been a mixed blessing. But 90% of what we’ve achieved over the last 18 months has been down to mentality, and mentality is a fragile thing. If we let this season end on a whimper then we’re giving ourselves a mountain to climb next season.

We need a big reaction to this - from RLB, from the captain, from the senior players, from the players hoping for a big move - from everyone. They should be furious about last night, and themselves and with each other.

I honestly thought they’d be a club announcement this morning, embarrassingly dumped out of both cups, spent an absolute fortune on decent players and we have a manager who simply doesn’t understand football. Not changing tactics, trying to play out from the back against Forest press was a disaster… then instead of take responsibility he blames the players. Has to go, he is done.

To be fair Forest players also tried the novel approach of shooting when the ball comes to them instead of passing it backwards, sideways then all the way back to keeper
