I think this is now the pinnacle of a players career. Earn vast sums, all the best players in the world play in it (dont pick and chose like in intl cricket), you dont get sides like Bangladesh and Zimbabwe in it and it reaches a tv audience of 100s of millions

What else in the shorter form competes with this in terms of money earning potential, skill level of all the sides and not just a couple and in terms of the tv global audience??

For a player its where they want to be, where the big bucks are and sportsmen in general like to follow the dough.

From a fans perspective, I think its shite. No interest in it whatsoever, give me a championship game any day of the week.

Absolute tosh, it's just highly paid hit and giggle cricket. The only reasons so many top players chose it over international cricket is financial gain and the ridiculous scheduling at the moment.

If when retiring, a players career highlight is playing in the IPL, then they have had a shit career. I'd much rather watch championship or Pro40 cricket.

This. The highlight of any player's career should be representing their country in Test cricket, and for a select few, achieving great things in that form of the game. The long format will always be the most important in terms of achievements.

thats the key phrase should be but isnt

its like football now, the champions league is better than intl football

I, genuinely, think the Aussie Big Bash will overtake it in a few years time.

Proper teams, not franchises, with a proper support and not "bought" fans who follow the team with the most stars. Indians are notoriously fickle and when the IPL crashes and burns I won't have any sympathy.

Maybe but the Big Bash will never have the same size of TV coverage domestically and internationally.

I was flicking between the IPL game and the 40 over game sky were showing, the contrast in the atmospheres was incredible, regardless of the money I know where I'd rather be playing.

I'm not quite sure if it's the pinnacle as there are some cracking teams (Mumbai Indians for instance) and some teams who look pretty poor (the one Sehwag plays for).

Mumbai have got (that is miles better than any international 20/20 side)
Tendulkar
Symonds
Harbajan Singh
Munaf Patel
Pollard
Rohit Sharma
Davey Jacobs

Maybe but franchises maintain support in America ok (and Milton Keynes).

Strange then, that the interviews I've seen with some of the lesser known Indians they all say that performing well in the IPL gives them a chance of making it into the Indian Test side.

Give the IPL it's dues, it's a great spectacle, but it's hardly like the real thing.

I dont get your point......

its like a lot of players like Morgan who has initially made a name for himself in one day cricket, wanting to play test cricket and getting in that way

Do the following play test cricket....
Shaun Tait
Shane Warne
Andrew Symonds
Lasith Malinga
Shane Bond
Scott Styris
Chris Gayle
Keiron Pollard
Dirk Nannes

Or are you trying to convince yourself they wouldnt enhance the standard of test cricket

Gayle does

It's debateable whether Pollard could actually command a place in the WIndies test team as he's nothing more than someone who can hit a few lusty blows. Tait's body seems unable to cope with the demands of test match cricket, and he's hit and miss at the best of times. The others, Malinga apart are all mid 30's plus and playing for one last payday.

Would Symonds and Warne improve the Aussie test side or weaken it?

Warne would improve it purely because they have no spinners remotely near test class, although there's no way he could play a 5 day game now.

I'm really not sure what Symonds would improve, they would be better off using Cameron White as an all-rounder, or even David Hussey.

Symonds at 6 instead of Khawaja

no brainer

Symonds is only 35 and he is a winner with pedigree

White isnt a v good 4/5 day player

Ponting
Clarke
Hussey
Symonds
Hadden
Warne

Symonds is at least 36, sure of it. He may have been part of a good Aussie team 5 years ago but he's never been a test regular and nothing suggests he would massively improve their side now. White or Khawaja would be much better options, I don't see one positive behind Symonds being recalled.
