The Good Causes Thread

Following on from @janiep ’s thread in the Politics Forum about paying more tax to benefit society, and people’s belief that more tax wouldn’t go to good causes under this government anyway, I thought it would be a good idea to start sharing some good causes that we can donate to if, like many on that thread, we would like to do more, but don’t know where to start.

Here are my first couple:

Sunderland Food Bank (thanks @Gideon Gungeon )

Beam - giving Homeless people job training and independence.

Please post more in here. If Mods can sticky this, that would be nice too.

Wearside women in need Domestic Abuse Charity | Wearside Women in Need | Sunderland

South Tyneside and Sunderland Hospitals Charity About our charity :: South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust

SHINE fund from CNTW (The local mental health Trust) Charitable Funds | Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust

Veteran's Recovery - The only Veterans Service who provide food parcels and supplies to Veteran's and their families across the north east. They're accepting Christmas gifts at the moment. Donation — Veterans Response

They have a unit near my home in Newcastle. Done a shift there before and there's a lady who lives in my area who collects for them.

Thankfully quite well supported because North East people are if nothing else generous.

As well as food and money, anyone who has time to give should consider it. I realise time is at a premium for everyone though, but just to put the thought in people's heads!

Dark times ahead for charities.
You would imagine so but there has been a lot of trust funds supporting charity around Covid. Where I work we will probably break even this year just about as we did last year but the previous few years were very challenging. Looking ahead local authorities funding of third sector will probably be an issue though.

I'd be happy to pay more tax to a more Socialist govt, I struggle to imagine being happy to pay tax to the f***ing Tories

I have been looking for good causes, there are plenty of foodbanks in my area that need support so I have been donating to them

also I've been paying in full for services I received before the plague regardless of whether I use them or not, this is because I am getting a full wage and wfh at the moment so that just makes sense

My wife tells me those two are lovely, and she'd love to take them if we didn't already have the feline French and Saunders.
Bump.

There’s a young black un and his sister (or vica versa) and I’d imagine they’ll want em to go together. That’s how we ended up with two. I was assured two are less hassle than one as they’re company for each other. It seems to be true as since one died the others noisy as owt and all ower you when watching telly. Was nivver like that with two.

The older black lad is nine. Nine! 9! That was the greatest footballer who ever set foot on earths number when we won the cup in 73! It’s a sign! If someone on here doesn’t snap the lad up then we won’t win the FACup this year and I for one want summet else to reminisce about before I shuffle off for good. You all know it makes sense. Gerrim signed on someone.

The brother and sister are the two my wife has told me about.

I give to Ataxia UK when I can. It’s a small charity and they’ve really struggled over lockdown, at a time when some of the families that rely on them have needed their support the most.

They provide research into and support to families affected by different forms of ataxia. It’s a condition I’ve seen first hand. One of my best mates growing up lived with Friedrich’s Ataxia, his first symptoms showed at the age of 4, he was wheelchair bound by 14 and suffered vision, hearing a speech problems from his mid-20s and had heart problems in his late 20s. He died suddenly in 2018 aged 33.

Hope not mate.

I've got to admit I don't often give to charity . My reasoning has always been that if we accept it as an informal tax the government will just do less and less social project.
I tend to give to direct crowd funds more .
At this point I may have to start giving as it's academic to these Tory twats , no one's starvation or poverty will oblige them to care .
