The golf thing

Yes it’s a bit lazy. But here’s an interesting article if you can view it

Why are so many cricketers obsessed by golf?

Crawley plays off 1 fwiw ;)

Life’s all about opinions

but the posts and crack about golf on here and online are fuckin cringeworthy. It’s just embarrassing

how it’s even become an issue I’ve no idea

it’s almost like they were winning too many games so people searched for something to moan about it

I'm going to wish I hadn't but I'm going to bite

It's only become an issue because they DON'T win enough games. When they're talking about golf in the middle of a series or tournament they're struggling in it inevitably brings up questions re how seriously they're taking the cricket. Just my opinion and not saying they can't have down time but I'd rather they left the golf chat out of interviews.

Yeh,Key has told them,as has Wood, about the golf chat -it's McCullum mainly. It appears to be his way of responding to the fans who question the amount of golf they play. But irresponsible of him imo- you don't bite the hand that feeds you.

No that’s not true at all. Wood was talking about the stuff they say about aggressive cricket he specifically said fans criticising the golf stuff annoys him

Listen to him on the pod with Athers n Nass

People like to twist for fuck all imo.

Not sure what people expect cricketers to do with their down time especially when away on tour.

Stay in their room all day!

Reckon some of the snide comments come from a touch of jealousy.

I mean who could be serious thinking characters like Stokes and McCullum don’t take test cricket seriously, it’s quite laughable tbh

Spot on

It shouldn’t even be a story

It's embarrassing as if elite players get picked on their golf

What some people are totally missing is that McCullum and Stokes care massively about results.

But try to take the pressure of players and allow them to be themselves, as they believe which is principle I believe in, that people play better when they trusted and relaxed as possible.

Rather than be frightened to death for their place which has happened in past years

They also don't mention 1win in 17 before baz

And they all played golf then too btw

It’s almost like it’s totally irrelevant

Yeah you’re right but it’s also not as deep as thst it’s just people desperate to be annoyed

Yeah I get that as well, after losing the last test in New Zealand you would think we had lost the series rather than winning it.

This team and regime have won games previous England teams would not even have attempted to do, but get no where near the credit for it.

Yet some people all over some of the mistakes they have made

Agree with that, I’d say some of that is more nuanced. And seperate to the golf thing, like the golf thing is mad. It just makes no sense. I don’t even get why it’s a story.

Didn't seem like they cared much when they chucked that 2nd test away in NZ 2 years ago mind. Some of the guff they were coming out with after was a total joke.

If I thought for one moment the " doesn"t get picked because he doesn't play golf" were serious opinions I'd dismiss them as not worthy of response because they've been made by those who know nothing about cricket nor how intense Stokes is about his cricket. The comments are clearly tongue in cheek.I'm amazed that people take them at face value and hence get annoyed at them. Both Key and Wood have said players need to be careful about what they say to the media. Comments such as " it doesn't matter if we lose... " invites provocation from those who pay a lot of money to support them. Of course players need down time, no rational follower would think otherwise.

Very diplomatic Comments by McCullum
Comments made by the players in the media have often come under scrutiny. In March, director of cricket Rob Key said the players need to "stop talking rubbish", while last month fast bowler Mark Wood admitted they can be "a bit dumb".

Speaking on Tuesday, New Zealander McCullum said: "It's not just about what you do on the cricket field. It's how you carry yourself. It's how you interact with the public. It's the messaging that you give.

"The ability these guys have to be able to play on the biggest stage, under the brightest lights and the pressure that takes is one thing, but also the ability to be humble and show some humility and not feel out of touch with the general population is something I'd like to see us improve on."
